Danelectro Fab Tone?

Re: Danelectro Fab Tone?

I have a Fab Distortion. It's the smaller one, with the knobs sticking out horizontally from the front. I like it as a boost stacked with other drive pedals.

Re: Danelectro Fab Tone?

I read a little about my Fab Distortion. Supposedly, it's based on a Nobels ODR-1. I've never tried the Nobels, so I can't compare/contrast, but for the going rate of around $15 used, I'd recommend it.

Re: Danelectro Fab Tone?

Danelectro makes some really cool pedals, if you ever want to gig out seriously with a Danelectro pedal, I recommend reloading the pedal guts it into a more rugged pedal housing and replacing the footswitches totally -They use the absolute cheapest components on the planet and are not reliable for nightly gigging IMO. They also outsource all of their technical support and parts (of the little amount of parts avilable-so if you get some sounds you rely on -upgrade the set up or buy multiple pedals.

I've had lots of people have me make them custom Danelectro setups with great success.

Great sounding stuff though.

Re: Danelectro Fab Tone?

I say this as a person who has owned two dozen Danelectro pedals and currently has a fully populated purple mini pedalboard: With the overflowing cornucopia of pedals available, I don’t consider it a viable practice to rehouse $15 and $30 pedals to try to give them what their designer didn’t. I’m not going to criticize somebody who wants to do that, but it’s not an investment I want to make. I see these pedals as toys.

Re: Danelectro Fab Tone?

I’ve considered rehousing the Distortion. My $400 Digitech RP-6 was a toy. This $15 Dan-O pedal sounds awesome.

Re: Danelectro Fab Tone?

The RP-6 was $400? Yeeeoowwzzzzaaa! I think I used to have one. Can’t remember what I paid for it.

The pictured pedal is built like a tank. I have the delay and chorus from that series and they are as bulletproof as any pedal I've ever owned.

The switching components and internal components are what are cheap. not the casing itself.

I don't disagree at all, they are in fact toys. So my point is, if you ever got in the habit of gigging and traveling with them and using them as a primary component of your show -changing out the switches is a good idea -which is easier to put in a standard enclosure than trying to mod the Danelectro casing itself -or having redundant backup pedals with you.

Takes about an hour to do -no big deal but the benefits are great.

Re: Danelectro Fab Tone?

Those full sized Dano pedals got a lot of good press if I remember correctly. Probably more an aesthetic hangup than anything. I think the big ones are metal.

However - the Dano Mini's are bad@$$ little price performers. These are plastic and not so sturdy. Small, cheep, one trick ponies, but a lot of cool little tricks. I have a Tuna Melt Tremolo - but there were a ton of them. Many got rave reviews. I have played a few (none recently). I remember a little Dan-Echo [edit - sorry PB&J] pedal that was pretty cool and very analog sounding.

Do you have the Tuna Melt with the toggle switch or the one with three knobs?

Re: Danelectro Fab Tone?

I have only tried the Daddy O, which was harsh and abrasive to me. However, the small Surf & Turf Compressor is remarkable, and supposedly a clone of old Ross compressors.

Re: Danelectro Fab Tone?

I better buy backups for the ones I've been using for the last decade+

No need to get defensive, glad they are working for you, I am merely suggesting to fortify the switching if you want to stomp on them often for gigs -many of their pedals us a very cheap SMD/SMT mounted tactile switching which depend on a rubber bumper to make contact from the switch above - instead of case surface mounted quality switch with wire leads feeding the components. This is tactile switching method is not a high cycle rated method -thus my suggestion .
