I gave a buddy of mine one of those Real Tube Tube Drivers. I just never used it. My friend found an old tube receiver and pulled out the tubes and had me check them for him. He had scored some nice old Telefunken tubes! So he put the best one in his Real Tube Tube Driver and the improvement was astonishing.

Those RCA long black plate 12ax7's like John put in Darrin's Tone Bone are my favorite NOS tubes to use in my old Fenders, BTW.

Lew....See,we know all about how to get tone buddy...

I found the MXR double shot distortion to be real similiar in tone to the Tonebone British for about half the price. The main reason I returned the Tonebone is because it has the input for the power adaptor on the side of the pedal, and that caused a problem with the chain of effects on my pedalboard.

That's too bad because I could have moved that jack for you pretty easily, but having said that, you like the MXR as much as the TB,so you made out good, plus the TB is $100 more..

Do you like your MXR more than the TB if the jack wasn't an issue?

The fact that the TB as a 12AX7 didn't make the TB smoother sounding buddy?

Today I found the OS-2 that I Modded also sounded very good and pretty close to what I Liked about Darrin's pedal...I bought that pedal pretty cheap off E Bay....

To my ears these pedals with tubes in them do not sound any better, or any worse than a good pedal without tubes, like the Marshall Jackhammer or Bluesbreaker. I also tried the Soldano Supercharger that uses a tube and costs around $400.00, and was not impressed at all. :smack:

I didn't measure the plate voltages to Darrin's TB,but I'd lay odds that the plate voltages are very low and don't play as much of a part in the tone,as it would in a tube amp preamp...That's why you don't hear or feel a difference between the tube vs no-tube pedals....My Boss pedal was right up there today...Sounded really convincing...

That makes sense John. Boss does have some great overdrive/distortion pedals that I would put right up there with the best. My favorite ones/made in Japan, have been discontinued but can be found on ebay once in awhile.

Yep...And they get very expensive to buy!

That's ok, I figure some of them are collectors items and will always keep their value.

reminds me of something that Ritchie Fliegler said... "Just because it uses tubes doesn't mean it will sound great."

Hey Y'all,

Just got the TB back in the mail today from John & I must say I do like the RCA tube he swapped for the JJ in there. There seems to be a little more life & openess to the pedal. I definitely dig it. I have the same JJ's (ECC83S) in my Blues Jr. & love 'em, but the RCA does sound better in the pedal. Thanks again John, looks like we both learned a little something. BTW everybody, John threw in the RCA tube, returned my JJ AND slipped a fin in the box (not necessary, John) to pay for my end of the shipping. Whatta guy, looks like the fiancee is gonna get a Christmas present after all. :laugh2: :burnout:

Peace,

Darrin

Phenomenal to hear buddy! That's what I thought also...The tube swap made the pedal have more dimension in it's tone and added more harmonic content to the pedal..I thought at times that the pedal was sterile or dry until I replaced the tube....

There goes all the RCA tubes if I need more! Glad you like it Darrin...You sure deserved the little extra...
