I had a DiMarzio Super Distortion which I had never used and couldn't get a decent price for on ebay. So I had a look and decided to make a Dave Murray type strat, since he's used Super D's on all the classic Maiden stuff.
I found a black Squier for a silly low price, £30 (which is a great over here considering it was in great nick with all the hardware still in place).
Here it is when I got it:
I cut holes in the existing pickguard and fitted the Super D in the bridge. I also fitted a middle single coil from a Fender USA strat and got some chrome pickup rings. Now these are only plastic as I was doing this as cheaply as possible and got these at a bargain price.
The neck PAF I swapped for a DDJ with Mark Cearlock.
So, at this point it was almost done, apart from the rosewood fretboard and the wrong, CBS style headstock. Luckily I'd sold a Squier strat to my pal a few years back, which had a maple fretboard, and since he never plays it, he said I could have take the neck off it....The decal was totally ruined, someone had replaced the Squier one with a Fender one before I got it all those years back but they'd made a poor job of it, so I replaced it with the correct 1957 style decal.
Here they are together.
and after neck swapping:
