Dave Murray Strat Build Thread

Re: Dave Murray Strat Build Thread

Why would anyone in their right mind want to copy that one?

Are you suggesting I'm not of sound mind? :naughty: Turk must be even more nuts, since he bought one of 'em!

Simple answer to your question - it's easier to use a vintage trem in a Squier that already has one, than start trying to fit a Floyd.

Re: Dave Murray Strat Build Thread

Not to mention some people actually like the Synchronized Tremolo better than a Floyd, just like some people like Floyds better than Synchronized Tremolo.

Oh but ignore the Kahler people. Those are the weird ones .

BTW nice project! I couldn't help but notice it's the second maple necked, black Strat that's based on a great guitar player's guitar. I think a Dominus-like obsession is building. Am I thinking someone's building Eric Clapton's Blackie and Jimi Hendrix's Black Beauty CBS next?

Lol!!!! Maybe the Clapton 7up green strat....

Re: Dave Murray Strat Build Thread

GT- thanks. I'll stick with the 250s.

Yeah. I hear ya on the singature. I was trying to get as close as possible to the reissue. But the signature is probably a step too far

great feedback. Thanks!

You can buy the signature as a decal if you know where to look. ;) The neck I had for mine had the original Squier logo removed before I bought it, so when I needed a decal the guy I got it from threw in the Dave Murray signature too. It's not perfect, but the guitar will never be sold, it's not meant to fool anyone (I left the Squier branded neckplate on it), but I figured why not put it on?
Lame? Yes.
Do I give a flying ****? No. It's just for my own enjoyment.

The difference is that mine are made for me, not a copy of anyone else's guitar. I haven't found any guitarists that are as odd as I am to copy off of. :D

Speaking of... I just redid one of my earlier ones.. off to update that thread.

Re: Dave Murray Strat Build Thread

Oh yeah, let me translate, that would be like forging Sir Don Bradman's signature on a Cricket bat.

lol

Now I KNOW fine you've been to Scotland so understand I have no idea what the feck you're on about, and are just trying to bait me. Cricket? Poof's game.

So I'll wait until the next time you're around Glasgow and crash my mobility scooter into you. :burnout:

I just meant obsession in the sense that once you build one.....you can't stop. Ever. Ever. It's worse than crack, assembling/modding/building guitars! Haha!

Gotcha.

That reminds me, I've got to go put another coat on the one I'm doing today.

:D

Re: Dave Murray Strat Build Thread

Keep in mind that I wasn't trying to pass of the signature as HIS signature, but just the fake signature that is on his "signature" guitar.

Anyway... I expect to order the rest of the components tonight so hopefully I can start the work this week!

We also know
There are known unknowns.
That is to say
We know there are some things
We do not know.
But there are also unknown unknowns,
The ones we don't know
We don't know."

Re: Dave Murray Strat Build Thread

I was just trying to emulate the guitar, and not pass off the signature as ACTUALLY Dave's signature. (ie, that he HAD SIGNED that guitar)

The other mentions above are kinda inferring that someone is trying to pass of the "fake" signature as the real thing, even if only for looks (ie, Babe Ruth's signature on a baseball as actually signed by the Babe himself).

The Dave Murray strat has a replcia of his signature on the back of the headstock - so do Eric Clapton's Blackie strat and the Jimmie Vaughan strats. The guitar wasn't actually SIGNED by the artist. Since I am replicating the guitar I was thinking of replicating the signature, but I was in nbo way going to pass it off that Dave actually signed the guitar. It really had nothing to do with the signature itself, other than it happened to be on the guitar.

But, whatever - the real issue is that you think baseball is a lame sport! How dare you!?

Re: Dave Murray Strat Build Thread

Baseball sucks balls.
If you want to know where I got my Dave sig, PM me. ;) It doesn't look as good as the one on Grandturk's, but it costs a lot less.

I really thought we had something, me and you... and you go and throw it away like yesterday's trash...

Let me guess, you like "soccer", eh? Uggg!

I'll think about the signature. Thanks!

Re: Dave Murray Strat Build Thread

Plans have changed slightly. I found a near mint MIM strat with a 50's logo already applied. So... I will likely use that as the basis for the Murray.

With that said, I think I will use the Squier to build a poor man's Gilmour to sell. I'll post those pictures as well.
