David Gilmore Guitar (NOS)

Re: David Gilmore Guitar (NOS)

I'm a huge fan of Gilmour, Pink Floyd and especially Gilmour's style & tone; that being said, it just looks forced and unnatural. I'd rather have his pickups and electronics to play on my own Strat and age it by playing. Same reason I didn't touch the Joe Strummer Tele a few years back.

Re: David Gilmore Guitar (NOS)

I recently worked on one of those, but it wasn't the relic'd version.

The nitro lacquer was very poor and already had some chip out on the playing area. It usually only happens at the skirts of the frets, but this one wanted to relic on it's own. The body however seems like it's finished with poly.
The guitar had a huge fret buzz problem and, to my surprise, lifeless sounding pups.
We were leaning towards a complete refret but we decided not to, because it would need a complete neck refinish that might compromise it's latter resale value. He decided to sell it in the end.

It was a genuine Fender CS guitar. I wouldn't pay 3k for a guitar like that, I'd rather buy a standard model and Gilmourize it.

They only have a pic of the relic version and I wouldn't get that... Hoping to get the "new old stock" version which is another way of saying "new"....not scratched up or worn or dented or nicked! Actually less expensive to not have the relic.....amazing that the new versions of the guitars without the wear and tear and worn look.

I would like to see the new old stock version if you do get it!

Re: David Gilmore Guitar (NOS)

You should find a place that is selling it for the full MSRP of around $7,000, and buy it from them.

Re: David Gilmore Guitar (NOS)

This is bull****. As overpriced as original 1982-1983 AVRI might be, they are not *that* overpriced. I have a Precision bass from that series (they are more reasonably priced that the Gilmour-inflated Strats but the same build and materials) and it's really nice. Sounds very different from my AmStd, even with the same pickup.

Scored it for exactly half of the MSRP! Made an offer I could not refuse and I was surprised they accepted. Now just have to process and then shipping and for sure will let you guys know how it all goes and hope to send in a clip in a couple weeks. :naughty:

7.25 radius! And yes, landed the NOS version...

Re: David Gilmore Guitar (NOS)

Leaving Las Vegas today. 6-7 thousand miles from now it will arrive!
With many preferring guitar necks other than 7.25, it is a wonder the David Gilmore's of the 60's and 70's did so well on the guitars of their time. The Warmoth necks I ordered were all 7.25 and feel good but of course will only really be able to tell when guitars are complete.....that will still take a while. What kind of amp do you think Gilmore sounds best using? I read somewhere he didn't use Marshals and now and then used a Fender Twin. His leads are more like Santana where they do not shred and are fairly melodic, so maybe that's why the 7.25 doesn't get in the way as some fear it might with serious bending of strings?

I'm not any sort of expert on Gilmour by any means, but I've always heard and read of him as using Hiwatt amps and getting most/all of his gain/Fuzz/OD from pedals.

Re: David Gilmore Guitar (NOS)

The hiwatts deliver their power very clean, but still have the output transformer of a tube amp (which doesn't hold on to the speaker like a transistor amp does). You really want those high capacity transformers in the hiwatts. So it's fair to say his sound is mainly shaped by pedals and the speaker(s).

Thanks! For a while it will be running only through fenders but will keep in mind your points about what helps shape his sound/tone. Appreciate it! Hopefully by this Friday we get to plug her in!

Re: David Gilmore Guitar (NOS)

Gilmour has been known to use Bassman RI amps. Remember McCartneys oldies concert as an example.

wow, so disappointing for a custom shop. for that price you'd think they'd set it up perfectly at the shop.

Re: David Gilmore Guitar (NOS)

For live shows it's Hiwatt (Custom 100...he's got five of them)WEM cabs and Pete Cornish designed pedal boards. Check out Pete's site for some cool rig pics.

If a Custom Hiwatt, what would be the one effects box/pedal you would try first? I'll probably start with the effects box first, and continue to use my fender amps so would like to know what one effect might best contribute to creating the D Gilmore sound. Thanks!

Re: David Gilmore Guitar (NOS)

Early or late? Early Gilmour is a Silicon Fuzz Face (choose your variety, I like Analogman's Sunface) and later (WYWH on) is a Big Muff (my choice is either Skreddy Wall of Sound or Pig Mine). Set the amp for a "fat" tone, right before breakup, but giving some tube warmth and roll the volume back on the guitar for rhythm to lead tones. (Critical for good fuzz face tone)

For modulation, a good Uni-Vibe type pedal gets his early sound (intro to Breathe), into a script Phase 90 for WYWH (Have a Cigar) and an EHx Electric Mistress for The Wall.

Finally, he's big on delay. I like an Analog Delay for thickening the tone and a simulated tape delay for the longer stuff.

Also, use a Vox Wah (no buffer) plugged in BACKWARD into the delay for the whale sounds on Echoes.

I know that 1994 Guitar Shop article had us all raving and drooling over his ridiculous Pulse Tour setup, but really some simple pedals into a nice tube amp can get you close enough. Mastering his phrasing, vibrato and touch is a WHOLE other story. ;)

Re: David Gilmore Guitar (NOS)

i've held the believe that Gilmours own sounds are more in his amps and effects then the strat itself.... i have a Custom Shop Time Machine 66 strat i modded with an SSL-5 in the bridge.... it's ok but i prefer my MIM Road Worn 50's strat over the custom shop... just because it's a Custom Shop does not always mean it will be a better sounding strat... in fact i've been loving a few of the new American Vintage Reissues my local shop has... 1 or 2 are really warm sounding guitars... every one various from piece to piece... i hope to build a basic pedalboard for my wish to play sounds closer to Gilmour...
