That's one of my favorite guitar solos and I love the tone. What do you guys suppose he used? Vintage single coil Strat pickups? EMG active Strat pickups? Neck pickup? Middle? Bridge? Marshall amp? Hi-Watt amp? Direct to the board? Compression? He gets a great tone on that solo.

Just, on the album in general, or are you referring to "Another Brick in the Wall" and then...if that, I'm assuming "part 2"

Re: David Gilmore...the Wall solo

I'd be interested to know what he was using for anything back then. I know he likes EMG's now, but his tone back then was incredible. As much as I love his neck tones, I think my two favorite tones are in "Have a Cigar" at the end, and the "Money" solo, which are both bridge.

Re: David Gilmore...the Wall solo

Another brick in the wall i "think" was actually a les paul :smack:

mind you its probably best i dont think... bad things happen when i think!

i havent heard the song in a while though im probably thinking of a different song

Re: David Gilmore...the Wall solo

Yeah...I was thinking of the tune: Another Brick In the Wall. I always assumed it was a Strat with a fair amount of compression. But was it direct or through an amp or what? Sounds kind of direct to me.

I thought the Comfortably Numb solo was the LP?

Re: David Gilmore...the Wall solo

Another brick in the wall has to be a strat. You can tell by the slight instances of quack in the solo. What amp did Gilmore use for that song? That has to be the pinnacle of tone for us mere mortals!

Re: David Gilmore...the Wall solo

"Another Brick In The Wall part 2"-1959 Gold Top Les Paul (with Gibson P-90 pickups) Snowy White (Gold Les Paul) Gilmour used this same Les Paul guitar to record the solo for this song in the studio.

says this site http://richardmahon.8m.com/ggg0003.htm

"Another Brick In The Wall part 1"-Fender Stratocaster (and delay)

Hmmm....a '59 Les Paul with P-90's? :smack: That's suspect right there...I thought '56 was the last year for P-90's?

I don't have the album but the version of the tune I'm talking about is the one they play on FM Radio fairly regularly.

Thanks!

Re: David Gilmore...the Wall solo

Im so damn sure i heard it on tv that he used a lp with p90's!!!!

this site also -

Gilmour also owns a 1959 Gold Top Les Paul with P-90 pickups that was used to record the solo for Another Brick In The Wall part 2

says

Occasionally, other guitars would be employed in the studio or live, such as a Telecaster or Les Paul. Some non-Strat highlights include an early-50s Gibson Les Paul Standard “Goldtop” (with P-90 pickups) used for the famous solo in “Another Brick in the Wall Pt. 2

This is correct, except it wasn't a 59, it was earlier. Direct into the board.

So: a '56 Les Paul with single coil P90's plugged direct into the board with some compression? OK...I'll buy that. Thanks, Lew

Re: David Gilmore...the Wall solo

54 I believe (notice no stopbar?)

Re: David Gilmore...the Wall solo

If it was Snowy's it was likely his '56, though I am sure that Dave has access to any LP he wants.

What I really dug was this "But still, it's nothing so involved that it would have made that part sound good if Dave's playing hadn't been so brilliant. That's his first take too!"

Re: David Gilmore...the Wall solo

I'm pretty certain it was a Vintage Stratocaster. And yes, the tones are absolutely stunning on that album. Shout outs to "Mother", "The Thin Ice", and "Comfortably Numb" which are without doubt, some of the finest solos not only on that album, but ever created.
