David Gilmour '' Black Strat '' Pickups from the SD shop ?

A couple of people on the DG Forum have said Seymour will take orders for a set of Gilmour inspired pickups from the custom shop ( Although the SD Shop says its a long wait ... ), now I've browsed around a couple of the big '' Gilmourish - heads '' have said that the closest thing to the pickups currently on his Strat are the Fender CS'54 pickups.

Now I love Fender guitars, Fender pickups ... well we have a love hate relationship ...

What are the closest pickups on the Duncan catalog to get that smooth tone ?

Any help is appreciated !

Cheers ! :werd:

I used to have one in the neck of my Strat, I switched it over to an SSL-1 (A5). I kind of miss the APS-1, it's an incredibly warm and "organic" pickup. I know it's tough to get a feel for a pickup with adjectives on the internet, but where the SSL has a more "immediate" attack, the APS seems to "bloom". The SSL seems more glassy, where the APS seems more woody. I'd actually like to have another Strat so I can keep the N/M SSL-1's and also have a set of APS-1's, I liked them that much.

I found the JB Jr on the bridge gave the 'other' Gilmour tones the standard strat neck p.up doesn't give.
(Solo's & GRUNT/sustained chords).
Vol pot on/on switch determins single/humbucker and with middle standard p.up gives the tinny 'shine on' intro tone fairly well also.
(through marshall 9000 valve pre, 100w power amp and marshall 2x12)

:boggled: REMEMBER - If you are lucky enough to find the Gilmour tones you want, you'll have no excuses for bum notes,
feedback, snapped strings, amp on fire, drummers fill face, etc!!!

I have a set of pickups out of an EB/MM Albert Lee sig model guitar in my strat. They're flat poled alnico II pickups that were wound by Duncan for EB. They measure in between 5-5.6k mark and have smaller than standard polepieces. The bridge pickup also has a pair of steel plates embeded into the bobbin itself. This makes for a surprisingly full, beefy tone for a pickup that only measures 5.6k.

In my MIJ '62 RI, they do the classic Gilmour thing in spades. If I want to go "modern" Gilmour, I just pick up my '77 strat with the DG-20 set.

What can I say, I'm spoiled. :burnout:

i had a set of those pups in my hands briefly, they were nice and low on the dc resistance, would have liked to spend more time with them

I read that for awhile DG was using an SSL-1 bridge PU with Fender PUs (not sure which kind) I recently changed all of mine to the California 50s SSL-1, they sound amazing, I can't imagine anything that would sound better.

He actually uses an SSL-5 in the bridge currently. Other than that I pretty sure he just uses low-vintage output single coil pickups.

It is actually an SSL-1C, which was made for Gilmour and later became a production pickup known as the SSL-5
