David Gilmour with a Charvel?

Re: David Gilmour with a Charvel?

Sure looks like it, it was 1986 after all.

Here's some more info:

In a performance to benefit the Columbian Volcano Relief Fund, on February 9, 1986, Gilmour used a blonde 57 re-issue Stratocaster during the first song, “Run Like Hell.” Gilmour played a Yamaha synthesizer to simulate the sound of a piano for the song, “Out of the Blue.” Gilmour’s set concluded with “Comfortably Numb.” This song was played with a Charvel Stratocaster style guitar. The guitar included a single EMG white humbucking pickup

I don't think it's a Charvel, strathead Charvels rarely came with Floyds standard, they were generally retrofits. Around that time Townsend had an endorsement deal with Schecter, and if it was Townsend's gig he may have lent Gilmour that guitar for the gig. The logo on the headstock, though blurry, looks closer to a Schecter logo than a Charvel logo.

By the way- Schecter are close to Charvels anyway. Supposedly Lynn Ellsworth started Boogie Bodies, which supplied necks and bodies to Charvel. I think Gregg Warmoth as with Boogie Bodies as well. Eventually Boogie bodies split, then Warmoth and Schecter were born. Schecter originally made neck, bodies, parts and later started assembling guitars, whereas Warmoth kept making parts.

Thanks for the info guys....... i always loved this tune and the echo guitar part David gives it is amazing!!! I've been trying to nail that tune for years and can't quite figure out the delay settings quite right...

Re: David Gilmour with a Charvel?

Man I always loved that tune. Yeah, the Gilmour part is cool; but I always thought Simon Phillips stole the show....

Re: David Gilmour with a Charvel?

OK, that song is so 80's cheesy!!! Its cool seeing DG with a Charvel though!

Re: David Gilmour with a Charvel?

The secret to alot of Gilmour's tone is the EMG SPC and EXG tone controls. I had a single EMG 81 in a Strat with an EXG cranked through the clean channel of an amp, preferaby a Fender, (the EXG boosts the highs and lows, SPC boosts the mids), you can nail Gilmour's clean tone. I haven't tried the SPC, but the EMG David Gilmour setup will really help get his tone

Re: David Gilmour with a Charvel?

I saw the show where DG plays the Charvel. That was one nice looking plank.

I think the effects chain is more important than the pickups. The EMGs allow you to get the sound with less hum.

Re: David Gilmour with a Charvel?

The guitar sure looks a lot like those new Charvel Reissues the 1978!!! I'd love to be able to afford one!!! And ya the video is really 80's looking.... i was a 16 in 86 and there was a lot worse stuff then this out there that is for sure.... this is one of my favourite Pete solo tunes and he plays no electric guitar on it at all.... go figure..

Re: David Gilmour with a Charvel?

I know the guitar which David played on the picture...
Here is the story what happend:
In the eighties I worked as a tech in a german music shop called No1 Music Center.
We imported Charvel guitars directly from Wayne Charvel to sell it in Europe.
This was because one day Don Dokken came to our shop and sold his Charvel guitar to us, because he wanted the money for a ticket back in the US.
But this is another story...
The guitar above is an original US Charvel guitar with the serial number #0052.
We got it as a special gift (very beautiful) from Wayne it and therefore is was NOT for sale.
It was equipped with an EMG active pickup.
(We also imported EMG pickups, Stuart Spector basses, Steinberger guitars, and so on...)
One day in the mid of the eighties, David visited our shop cheked some guitars.
Then he saw that guitar, played it a while and wanted to buy it.
But... it was not for sale. Sorry David!
The happy end: David called Wayne by phone and asked him to make a new same fine guitar for No1, so that the boss from No1 (Bernhard) finally sold it to him.
Yeah, the guitar was gone away :-(
Later we received the new and also very fine Charvel guitar... but it was not the #0052
So I dont know what happend with that guitar. Probably sold to someone else.

Btw: I own a very special Charvel guitar from the same early eighties too... Till today I like these guitars most!

Best regards
Kai
