David Gilmour's Dark Side of the Moon lead tone.

I'm a huge Pink Floyd fan, and when I think of my favorite strat lead tone, it's always Gilmour's, especially on the Dark Side of the Moon album. Of course those were the pre-EMG days. :smack:

I know it's a strat, and most likely a HiWatt with OD pedal, but does anyone know if his pickups were Alnico 5 or 2? Stock? They sound like 5, but I'd like to know for sure. Anyone know his gear on that album?

This Page is about the best I could find, but it doesn't say anything about before DSOTM, it's got some nice pics of his FX and racks though... :32:

Re: David Gilmour's Dark Side of the Moon lead tone.

He was using a Mosrite guitar for 22-frets soloing. And the late 60's/early 70's strats were all loaded with Alnico 5, if I recall correctly.

I love the Floyd as well. Everything I've ever read or heard has said he used a tele exclusively on that album and if I remember correctively it was Syd Barret's. To get that sound in a strat one would need a twangbanger. Even the album jacket shows him with a tele so I can't be TOO off base.

Of course I have not idea why I told YOU what pup to use.....preaching to the choir I'm sure.....maybe it's b/c all I could think was of all the ZILLIONS of PAULS you have and didn't think you had the single coil experience. :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2:

Some of those solos are a Strat with vintage a5 pickups similar to the Antiquity Surfers or SSL-1.

But we learned here a while back that some of those solos were done with a Gibson Les Paul Gold Top with P-90's. Like the solo on the Wall...which is my favorite Gilmour solo.

Re: David Gilmour's Dark Side of the Moon lead tone.

I don't really have a clue as to what gear was used. I know that when I put that album on, I'm not even remotely concerned with duplicating tone. I just sit and enjoy the music. BTW, my favorite solo in "Dark Side Of The Moon" is on the tune "Time". My alltime favorite part of the album is the vocal solo on "The Great Gig In The Sky".

Re: David Gilmour's Dark Side of the Moon lead tone.

Don't know what he used, but remember seeing a film of him in the studio for that album, recording a solo with headphones on, the guitar was a dark colored tele looking guitar with a humbucker, the control room made him stop because there was some feedback and he was pissed. Said something like, "what's wrong with that?!?" Gilmour is in my top three, if not my fav of all guitar players. Personally, I think his tone has less to do with his equipment and more to do with his magical fingers and the way he holds his mouth.

The Bill Lewis guitar. I said "mosrite" but its an error, sorry. That's the 22 frets guitar he used for the solo on money.

That solo rocks, with the different tones and doubled guitar sound, I just love it. LOVE IT!
