Dazed & Confused!

Re: Dazed & Confused!

I've got a few bootleg recordings of the Yardbirds doing their take on the tune and was so curious about the Jake Holmes version when I first read about it I bought the CD Jake released in 1967. It's funny Jake opened for the Yardbirds and preformed the song, then the Yardbirds covered it, then Zep rearranged it, recorded it, had a hit with it, never mentioned Jake in the credits and to this day Jimmy Page claimes he'd never heard the Jake Holmes tune before in his life...

Anyway, if you are interested this video has a few interesting things in it...

WOW!!!! Christian, I just checked out that video you posted about Zep's recordings and taking credit. It's very eye-opening. Again: WOW!!!!

Thanks for posting that, bro. Everyone should check that out. It wouldn't hurt to confirm the sources, but just listening to those clips give me enough pause.

Re: Dazed & Confused!

That was VERY eye opening! I have always known that many of the old blues #s were written way back when by black dudes but some of the other stuff is incredible! Zep has always been one of may absolute favorites bands and still are. The first concert that I ever saw was Zep in Honolulu in 1970, also my third concert there too in 1971 or 72. My second was Steppenwolf in between!!!!!!!:notworthy

Having said all of that, I have far less respect for them for honesty and giving credit where credit's due.

Re: Dazed & Confused!

My intentions were not point the finger & say "look what they stole". I'm not defending it either it was more of an observation of the creative process that LZ used and how the song evolved.

They also covered several Willie Dixon tunes & Joan Baez wrote "Babe I'm going to leave you". That was on one of her records in 1962.

Re: Dazed & Confused!

I knew Zep ripped off some riffs, but FFS I can't believe no one's ever heard of Jake Holmes after listening to that - Zep basically ripped the lot off! Even the little silly bits!
Page was in the Yardbirds, so I'm not overly surprised they did this song. But did he just completely rip off the Jake Holmes song or what?
And yeah the Yardbirds singer is really crap.

Re: Dazed & Confused!

BTW, on the Yardbirds one, I have to say, as with all live versions of this song - it's really bloody boring and drawn out! Gimme the album version every time thanks! :)

Re: Dazed & Confused!

Watching this vid about who Zep ripped off is an eye opener and makes me angry that they don't admit the obvious rip offs.
However, you can't forget songs like Kashmir, Stairway (oh wait FFS just saw the end of that vid!!!), Rain Song etc etc etc etc etc.

Point is, yeah they ripped off some riffs, and even almost whole songs in some early cases, but they still made them very much their own, to the extent they became something new.

That song "Taurus" by Spirit is really beautiful BTW. Stunning. How the hell Page got away with that is beyond me. Even I've heard of Randy California.

I wasn't opening a can of worms, at least I hope I wasn't...I just felt like it sort of fit with the theme of reworking existing songs...

I get it..... Jimmy Page was a Genius........ and a thief! Its the difference between him and Clapton. EC always credited the blues guys when he "borrowed" some of their stuff Like in Layla, he said he borrowed it from ALbert King... Pagey attempted to hide it.

Holy ****! I'll give you that the vocal for that song is not particularly strong but the ****ing Yardbirds are about as great a band as there ever was and Keith Relf should likely be considered as important as Jagger.

Big +1 bro.....seminal band and their contribution to the genre of blues rock can't be denied.
