You talk about the JB and DD being bright and you recommend the C5????? Duncan recommends this for Dark guitars. The C5 is on the upper end of the brightness scale for sure. It isnt harsh like the JB can be but, it sure is bright in most guitars. If a JB is OK but, that high mid/harshness gets on your nerves, the C5 is a good choice if you still want a bright pickup.

All PU recommendations come with an implied "tweak your tone with magnets" advisory. I use 250K pots on my bridge PU's, C5 included, so the mids & lows come through nicely. If I used 500K's, I'd put an A4 in my C5's.
