DD vs Custom vs EMG in bridge for Les Paul

I like the sound of emg's but i would prefer to stay passive. There is after all no way i'm putting an emg in the neck coz it SOUNDS CRAP on cleans.

Some say the DD is close to Emg 81/85 others say the custom is....
Well i cant try Duncans and return them where i live so i need advice.

I borrowed a JB which i didnt like.....and i have a dimebucker but it sounded a bit scooped compared to an EMG 81 i heard in another LP (but not far off).

I considered mixing an active Emg with the passive Alnico 2 Pro i have in the neck now....and some how making up for the output difference.....and suggestions soncerning that would also be appreciated.

Thanx

I personally prefered the DD over the custom in the Lespaul's bridge position. It sounded tighter, more aggressive, more cutting and gave the sound a bit more thickness to it.

was never really big on active pickups my self. A friend of mine braught his guitar over a while back and it had an EMG81 in the bridge and when he plugged it into my rig, it got really really bright.

I also noticed that my Duncan distortion has much more output then the EMG81. but hey, who knows.

Cheers

I dig the 81 in Pauls, actually. Sounds nice and tight, with good output and insane clarity.

I´m using EMG 81 Bridge and EMG 85 neck on my gibson explorer, and it sounds good..but not for what I want to play.. i need a pickup that can give me a good distortion but with lower gain on the amp, to play some agressive blues/classic rock. I'll change the emgs, I think it's better use passive humbuckers on good pieces of wood like mahogany, but thats just for my tastes.
maybe I'll try a duncan distortion on bridge..but the EMG 81 is clear, loud, ang extremely nice for soloing
dependes on your taste
