Dean DMT pickups?

Re: Dean DMT pickups?

yes!!! I do use 'm. I have the following.

I have the baker act. its like a jb with lesser harsh highs. I really like it. its got the super-great harmonics of the jb, it cuts through like crazy.

I paired it up with a hands without shadows, the michaelangelo batio signature. its so slippery smooth! super articulated and precise.

My second set is the michael schenker set. HOLY damn that set ROCKS like crazy. its one of the best sets ever. its like a jb/superdistortion combination. can't really say enough how good that set is.

The other set I have is the leslie west pickup in the bridge and the dimetime in the neck. the dimetime feels like a hotrodded PAF. raunchy, pushy, airy, but most of all; its just dirty. the leslie west is also super-superdirty, like a p90. its also as broad as the p90, but a bit less open, though it cleans up perfectly.

all in all, they're the only pickups where I haven't felt the need to do some hybridising.

Re: Dean DMT pickups?

Wow, that's a pretty shining overview!

So, which of the Shenker models is like the JB? Also, between the Baker Act and the JB-like Shenker, which do you prefer and why? One better for hard-rock and/or metal?

Re: Dean DMT pickups?

this is really encouraging...I'm literally on the verge of pulling the trigger on a new guitar for a steal.

Re: Dean DMT pickups?

I would like to try the Baker act. I hear its tight, with tight bass, but the treble/high mids of a JB. That would be perfect. But I can't find anybody thats tried a Equalizer.

Re: Dean DMT pickups?

Well, i just recently bought a Dean Custom 750X 7 string, and the DMT Designed pickups it came with surprised me by how good they sound, considering how affordable the guitar was ($250). They are quite smooth sounding, smoother than my Dimarzio DP-101, however they don't sound as full and aggressive as i'd like them to. They are awesome for soloing though. They excel at high gain soloing, and at very clean tones. The stock DMT Designed pickups are way better than most pickups that'll come with an affordable guitar. I hope that helps, i think DMT is awesome, and they probably only get better when you buy made in America 'real' DMT pickups. Greetings from Molvania

Re: Dean DMT pickups?

I have had two or maybe three Dean Vinnie Moore Shredhead bridge pickups and they are very good, reminds me a lot of the Perpetual Burn, medium output and a modern take of a Classic Paf.

Re: Dean DMT pickups?

I have a Baker Act (b) & MAB Hands Without Shadows (n) in my Raven West neck-through & they're both great pickups. The Baker Act is like a fine-tuned JB (slightly less honky mids & tighter bass)..awesome pup w/ killer harmonic overtones & the MAB is probably the best neck pup for shred out there and definitely has a very distinctive/unique sound. It's super fat, but with a pronounced pick attack that gives it amazing note definition & clarity...also very sweet for a ceramic ...though I will say my new Fokin "Rocket Queen" is another monster in the neck (as defined ..& maybe even sweeter, but with a slightly less pronounced pick attack).

This is quite a thread necro, but judging from the astonishing number of thread views, I'm guessing that info is skimpy out there on Dean DMT pickups, so a lot of folks are coming to this thread trying to find info. I certainly have been one of them.

My experiences with DMT pickups has been very positive, all from stock pickups in Dean guitars.

I'm tremendously impressed with the Nostalgia set. As others have observed, this is basically the Duncan 59 set, just less scooped. The Duncan WLH set also answers to that description, and, to me, the Nostalgia bridge is indeed a lot like the WLH bridge - just a good, solid A5 PAF that doesn't get brittle in the highs like so many A5 PAFs do.

The Nostalgia neck is phenomenal - in my Dean Trans Am (Firebird-type guitar), it is currently my favorite neck humbucker of all time (!). It solves the boomy 59 neck issue and is crisp and articulate, yet slightly chewy. In my Dean Cadillac, the Nostalgia neck sounds good but is slightly too lively in the top end for me (probably due to addition of maple top and ebony fretboard vs. all-mahogany body and rosewood fretboard in the Trans Am), so I might switch to an A2 in the neck. I'm thinking of trying out the DMT Flathead in this position; the sound clips sound great, very vintage, practically Seth Lover-like.

My Trans Am came stock with the Equalizer bridge. This is a decent high output A5 in the 16K range - not like a JB, as the spec would suggest. It's just hot and full of mids, sort of reminding me of modern day Fender humbuckers. I don't view that as a bad thing (I'm one of the few that like Fender humbuckers), but the sound and feel is pretty generic. "Hot rock pickup" pretty much sums it up. It's not a great tonal match for the much more open Nostalgia neck.

I just ordered a Vinnie Moore Shredhead to pair in the bridge with the Nostalgia neck, and can't wait to try it out, as the clips sound great.

In another thread about DMT, you seemed to have a different opinion. What changed, Orpheo?

Re: Dean DMT pickups?

Dean is HQ'd here in the Tampa area, so I've gone to the factory (really a warehouse) several times. Their pickups are great, and work well for the music you are more likely to hear when people use Dean guitars. I am not really the average Dean fan, though, but the pickups I have tried have been great.

Re: Dean DMT pickups?

I have changed out all of the Dean pickups, I think. But DMT's are decent set of stock pups. WOuldn't be running out to dump them immediately. Might keep them, but would likely find something more my taste sooner or later.

Baker Act - now that is a cool hot pup!

Totally agree, also on the Baker Act. Talked to Pat a few times. He totally comes off as a fan of pickups to begin with, who also makes pickups. That's a cool combination.

Re: Dean DMT pickups?

I love the Baker Act (I have one in the bridge and another in the neck) and the Schenker Lights Out set...

Re: Dean DMT pickups?

my Lights out video on youtube is probably the ones you've all seen haha. its okay, rounded kinda like the gravity storm. the neck.

Re: Dean DMT pickups?

Maybe I should get a Baker Act for that Inferno I just got...and a DMT for the neck....

Stratguy23,

I recently got a Dean Icon Flame top that has the Nostalgia set as stock. I generally like the Nostalgia bridge pickup, but I'd prefer something that is a little more focused under high gain - while staying within the same character of that pup. Got any recommendations?

Re: Dean DMT pickups?

As someone who is a pickup changing fanatic...and literally dozens of pickups to try out to find each guitars best tone...
I have a Dean ML Switchblade, the stock pickups are outstanding!!!
I have never had another guitar that I did not change pickups...
These pickups are not being changed!!!
Neck - Nostalgia
Middle - Single Coil
Bridge - Baker Act
