Dean Markley Blue Steel Strings – Thoughts?

Re: Dean Markley Blue Steel Strings – Thoughts?

When I was first starting out, late 90s-mid 00s, these were pretty much all I used. Between my underdeveloped technique and cheap instruments with poor setups I broke a ton of strings, and these seemed to last longer than the other brands that were readily available in my area. Nowadays I don't really care for them as much. I don't know if they changed their formula, or my changing tastes, or other brands caught up/surpassed them, but I IMO they're not as good now as they were 15 years ago.

Thanks for the input! I've read some reviews that seem to indicate recent quality control issues.

I've never tried them but am interested in your experience if you get a set.

Just bought a set and will update the thread with my experience–think I will probably still prefer the D'Addario Phos-Bronze but am always up to trying something new.

I used those DM strings, no more for me . Try Elixir Nanoweb .

Not a fan of Elixirs personally–wanted to like them but never sounded right to my ears.

Oh, and I just noticed your link was to the acoustic strings. I've used electric and bass, but not acoustic.

Not a problem! I was going to try them on my acoustic first but would also consider them on my electric!

Re: Dean Markley Blue Steel Strings – Thoughts?

Years ago I tried GHS, SIT, DM, and D'Adarrio strings, among others I can't recall. I don't recall ever trying the Blue Steel acoustics, though. I do like the Blue Steel bass strings when they're first put on. They sound very much like a piano to me, at least the open notes. Of course that's also been at least 10 years or more.

However, I have never liked either brand's electric guitar strings. The DMs die quickly and break easily, and the D'Adarrios feel like the plain strings are hex-shaped. I know they have sets that use a hex core, but all the sets I tried felt like the high E was square.

I used the electric ones back in the 80s early 90s. Incredibly stiff, high tension. They were pretty popular back then for players who needed to build strength. My girly floyd guitars can't handle those.

I've been playing guitar for almost 30 years and I have tried many different brands of guitar strings. DM Blue Steels are on the top of my list. They sound crystal clear and seem to last longer.

I used to use Blue Steel for electric exclusively in my early days of playing. I loved the bright tone, and they lasted long; however, these days I'm really into nickel-plated strings.

I've always avoided them due to the theory they wear frets quicker, true or not I'n not sure, but it does make sense that they would.
Easier to tweak my amp's tone-knobs than to do fret-work IMO.

That's exactly why I switched to nickel-plated strings.:bigthumb:

Instead of the Blue Steels, try the Le Tigre. Bit of a softer feel.....great for catalogues.

Pardon my ignorance, I can't find anything for Le Tigre guitar strings....am I missing something? :smash:

When I had my SG I loved having blue steels on them. Something in the way they feel...they almost feel soft if that makes sense, as in soft to the touch.

But then I kept breaking them all the time so I had to move on.
