Dean Soltero for a Schecter C1 Classic?

Hi, guys!

I've been offered a deal, a Schecter C1 Classic (Korean, equipped with the Duncan JB and Jazz combo) for my Dean Soltero Standard Special (also Korean, with USA DMT pickups, Baker Act bridge, Nostalgia neck).

The Schecter seems to be in good health.

My question is: is this a resonable trade? Or am I getting a poor deal? I.e., the classic's top is only veneer, not an actual slab of maple.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Dean Soltero for a Schecter C1 Classic?

I like the Scheter C1's, almost bought one a few months ago but the seller was completely unreasonable on his price.....

If I were you I would play both guitars; whichever one is more comfortable in your hands is the winner....

Re: Dean Soltero for a Schecter C1 Classic?

I can't play the Schecter, unfortunately, the guy is from another city. It's always good advice, though, to try any guitar hands-on before deciding. But do you think these guitars are in the same value range, generally? Thanks!

Re: Dean Soltero for a Schecter C1 Classic?

I believe the are on par with each other as far as resale value goes, If you have a GC local I am will bet they have a C1 there you could give a test drive....

Re: Dean Soltero for a Schecter C1 Classic?

What about in terms of specs for these particular models? Am I getting ripped?

This thread is no fun without pics, although I'm not sure about the actual colors in question.

I've never played the dean but there are some noticeable differences in the specs:

-Dean is LP shaped, schecter double cutaway (easier fret access)
-Dean is 22 fret, schecter 24 (therefore schecter neck pickup will never sound as deep and full as a typical 22 fret neck pup, imo)
-Dean has the switch on the horn and an extra tone knob, this is better than the schecter if you like the les paul style setup
-Schecter has a much nicer headstock, imo

I think you should do the trade, but I am completely biased towards the schecter since I own one (C1+ that is)

The guitars are actually these:

Thanks for the idea of showing some pics. I'd definitely enjoy the 25.5 scale on the Schecter, one of the reasons I want to trade the Dean is I can't seem to get used to the 24.75 feel and tone. However, the Dean is very well made, IMO, much less used than the Schecter in question, and well-spec'd, that's why I'm hesitant.

I'm not a fan of that particular look for the c1 classic, I don't like gold hardware and the quilt top and busy fretboard are just over the top for me. Hate to say it, but given these two options I'd probably keep the dean. Just a cosmetic choice though, I can see how there would be a great many people who love the classic.

Re: Dean Soltero for a Schecter C1 Classic?

I vote for the Schecter

Re: Dean Soltero for a Schecter C1 Classic?

Indeed, the Schecter is a bit over the top, but I guess that's part of its charm. If that inlay was just a decal/sticker, it would have been very lame, but as it is a proper inlay, I tend to overlook the fact it's a bit too much, even more apparent than the one on some Steve Vai Ibanez JEMs.

Re: Dean Soltero for a Schecter C1 Classic?

I was just about to say the C1 is kind of busy. add black rings and knobs to the Soltero and it will be pure secks.

Re: Dean Soltero for a Schecter C1 Classic?

Do you not like the dean?? I think they are on par as far as value. however, they are going to play and feel different.. If you dont like the Dean, then trade. The Schec will have a 25.5 scale neck and is a bit fatter neck and a bigger body.

I changed the knobs to black :D, it looks even better.

I like the aesthetics of the Dean very much. Regarding scale, that's just the thing! I can't come to terms with the 24.75. I can tolerate it in terms of simply playing, but I can't bring myself to love the tone. It is creamy, furry, beautiful in its own right, just not my thing. I'm all for brilliant top end, lush harmonics, tighter feel. Except the "woman tone" on the neck, which is awesome. I even like the "soft V" neck.

Also, the smaller body does not suit me, I've been told it looks like a toy on me (pretty tall fella here). Although is as heavy as a proper Les Paul (about 10lbs - 4.5 kg).

The Dean is an awesome guitar, just not for me, you know how it is. It's a total shame just keeping it in the box.

The Schecter seems like a more suitable option. It'll quench my thirst for humbucker tone, while allowing for the benefits (IMO) of the longer scale and some single-coil(-ish) brilliance.

Re: Dean Soltero for a Schecter C1 Classic?

Dangit...so much for Soltero goodness.

Can't hate on the scale preference. Can't mod it to change it. Get the Schecter.

Then there ya go! Decision made. If you cant gel with it.. I had a Charvel model 5. Was sooo excited to have it cuz I wanted a soloist or model 5 or 6 since they first came out in the 80s. But, the fretboard was too wide for my comfort. It pained me, but I had to let it go .

Re: Dean Soltero for a Schecter C1 Classic?

Schecter it'll be, then? So you guys are pretty confident it's the same value for buck, all tone/scale/looks difference aside?

Re: Dean Soltero for a Schecter C1 Classic?

I just checked the Completed Listings on ebay for both guitars and they both fetch around the same price used. But the Schecter has the scale length you like and I'd personally give Schecter the edge being it comes with the JB/Jazz Duncans, is a bigger bodied guitar(I can relate to you on this... I'm 6'5. Some smaller bodied guitars look like I'm playing a violin with a shoulder strap LOL) and has a Tone Pros Bridge. Go for the Schecter Man!!!
