Dean V or a Gibson Flying V?

Price? Playability? Sound? Weight? Etc....

If you have pictures of either...post them please! Photos of guitars on like Music123.com and Musciansfriend.com do no justice when it comes to the finish.

I'm almost positive on getting a V....but for the Deans, I also like the ML's...the ML's are sweet because the body is both a V and an Explorer shape. :32:

If you play sitting "classical style", then your right leg will be right in between the V's legs. Shouldn't be a problem.

Playing V's sitting down you have to adopt a classical playing position and place the lower horn/v in between your legs.

I'd go with Dean but I'm biased.

You also have to decide whether you're talking USA or import Dean ... and what type of Gibson V.

If that's how you feel, buy the Dean.

Seriously though, try and play both and buy the one you like best. I have associations and history with Gibson that bias me to that brand. If you don't, just try them both and buy the better guitar (as long as you can afford it).

This is the best advice ...

I'm biased towards Dean, Simon's biased towards Gibson ... but hey ourstables reflect this

The '79 series are great guitars for the money, but from my experience I think the overall quality of Gibson's are higher.

The problem in looking at an import vs. a USA made is that the Gibson will definatly be a higher price. So there you get the buying the name comments. But I think that the overall consistency of quality is better for Gibson than Dean's import lines (like the '79 series)

If you asked a Dean '79 series V vs. an Epiphone '58 RI V .... I could give you a definate answer. (Dean obviously)

Like I said the Dean '79 V is a good guitar ... Just swap out the pickups and electronics and give it a good setup.

if you wanna dish out the money for a dean USA V though (probably around $1500), theyre far superior to gibsons IMO. that being said, all the gibson V's ive played were very good (almost bought one in december). and if you dont wanna spend that much money either, i dont think youd be disappointed with the dean '79 at all

i'm not really a gibson fan but i urge you to check out the Flying V from the Faded Series- one of the few gibsons i respect...

personally i really dislike pickguards ..especially on V's..for the money youd spend on a gibson you could get a dean V and swap out pretty much everything in it with very high quality stuff and still have quite a bit of cash left over..my friend bought a Korea made DEAN Z ( white with black binding ) ..its one of the nicer guitars ive seen...and nicer than any gibson ive picked up in a guitar center or similar store

I really loved the Chafin Del Sol I had for a year or two (and that was Korean). I've never played a USA or Time Capsule Dean, but I would imagine they're mindblowing (considering the Korean was one hell of a guitar).

The other guitarist in my band plays V's exclusively. He got a Dean 79' series and a Gibson fadded.
I prefer the Gibson. He prefer the Dean.
IMO the Gibson sounds and plays better! And I dont like the headstock on the Dean's!!

Anyway, you must try them yourself. Buy the one that gives you a big grin when you play it!!

I actually prefer the classical position while playing sitting down. It took a while getting used to, but it feels natural. But you do need something for your left leg to be on. So I wouldn't go against V's on this argument.

This is interesting to me since I just went through a similar decision as described here. I wanted a flashy, fun metal guitar. A guitar that I could pull out just for crunchy metal stuff a few times a set. I wasn't looking for a new #1 to replace my Strat.

I eventually decided that a Flying V was what I was looking for but thanks to Gibson's new policies with their stores (which apparently applies to Epiphone too) I couldn't find a single Gibson V anywhere in town. So I was forced to look for alternatives online. That's when I found the Dean '79 reissue V. Price was right, reviews are good, and it seemed to be just what I was looking for. So I ordered a white one and am expecting it within a few weeks hopefully. I'll let you know what I think after it arrives.
