decent 8inch 8ohm speakers??

Anyone know if and where or who makes nice decent great quality 8inch 8ohm speakers? Only ask as a speaker replacement for my frontman 15G would be cool. I do have a little love affair with the amp as it has lovely cleans hence why I keep it but I think a new quality speaker would just hit the spot a bit more, going to service the amp as some dust has got in the pots etc....

Cheers

Re: decent 8inch 8ohm speakers??

LOTS of guys really like the Weber offerings..... and they ARE good.
I have kind of taken a liking to the Jensen (is it CR8.?)
Their 8 inch speaker with the Gold label and Red print. I have installed those in quite a few Vibro Champs and Valve Juniors.
They really improve THOSE amps by a mile.
good luck

Re: decent 8inch 8ohm speakers??

Webber is good, really but, the shipping fees are too much. I see you are placed in UK so, believe me, shipping fees are about the 40% of the price list.
But, in UK, you should find something useful in brands with a well stablished dealer, as Celestion, Jensen, Fane, ...
If you love cleans, maybe some Fane (as Hiwatt uses) or Jensen would be in my list.

Thanks guys,

Have found a Jensen vintage ceramic for £30 and there's another for 50 which is alnico.. Might go ceramic I like bright cleans

Re: decent 8inch 8ohm speakers??

Just thinking...

its just two speakers and two different magnet types but I have no clue which one to go for....

Re: decent 8inch 8ohm speakers??

I would not loose sleep over magnet material for that amp.
I think if you can get a NEW 8" speaker for about 50 USD, you will be AMAZED at how much better your amp sounds. Save the stock speaker, and reinstall it If/When you sell the amp.
best

Alnico is usually warmer, a bit less defined note-by-note, with great harmonical content and a nice way to break up for blues or hard rock.
Ceramic is usually colder, more defined note-by-note, with greater compression when breaking up. Also, it's usually louder.

Probably for your bright cleans, I would go Ceramic.

Be sure to check dealers for Webers before writing them off. They usually charge less for shipping than does Weber when you buy direct. I've purchased a few from Musician's Friend, with free shipping (to my U.S.A. address).

In mind I do live in the UK, so ordering from the USA makes no sense, as I still have to pay tax and import duty on stuff.

Re: decent 8inch 8ohm speakers??

Jensens are made in Italy and should be available in the UK. Some of the Chinese made Celestions are inexpensive.

Re: decent 8inch 8ohm speakers??

I'm taking a Liking to the Ceremaic Jensen, works out quite well price wise.

£28.00 without Tax and Shipping, VAT is 20%,

So we have 28 + 5.60 + 4 (postage) = £37.60 which is pretty good!

Re: decent 8inch 8ohm speakers??

Celestion recently released an 8" speaker designed exactly for what you're looking for: http://celestion.com/product/8/eight_15/

Only £21.60 from here: http://www.bluearan.com/index.php?id=CEL8158R. If I still still had my Peavey Rage 158 (my mate has borrowed mine for over 8 years) I'd upgrade it with an Eight 15 for the hell of it, just to see the difference. You're in the UK so it should be easy to find one.

I like the sound of that deal. Its just that the celestion is rated at 15 watts exactly and my fear is that I won't have enough headroom??? The Jensen is rated at 25 watts so isn't that better???

Re: decent 8inch 8ohm speakers??

Does the speaker in the Frontman say how many watts it's rated? Provided you're not diming the master volume I don't think it would be risky to run a 15-watt speaker with a 15-watt solid-state amp. You may even run into power amp distortion before the speaker breaks up. Depends on how loud and clean you want to go and how much your amp can dish out. With a lot of volume, those little transistor things can get ugly quickly.

If it's about clean tone then keep in mind that the Eight 15 does seem to be geared towards more of a Brit flavour. Some of the Jensen and Weber 8" models may be more suitable if clean headroom is your absolutely priority. If anything, ANY aftermarket 8" guitar amp speaker should be a significant upgrade from the crappy OEM speaker already in your Frontman.

no clue on the rating and have had a good search... I will think about it, cause that celestion is gonna be good quality and its cheaper on the wallet.
