Hi
I have been playing guitar for a year and a half and i am looking to upgrade my amp to something decent. I am looking for an amp with a decent amount of effects, nice cleans and versatile distortion. Pretty much a goood all rounder.
Does anyone have any suggestions.

. . . i do not understand the "decent amount of effects" bit !

Are you referring to a modelling amp, like the Cyber Twins from Fender ?

All the top-quality amps i know/want has valve driven trem, good reverb, 2 channels and a super interactive EQ. (...but not much more)

Bogner Exctacy

an ecstacy for a person who's played 1-1/2 yrs. i hate sound offensive but that's a bit overboard on the cash amount, don't you think? IMO the amp that does 1 style well is better than any amp does all things okay.

Re: Decent all rounder amp

if you're after effets go for a modeler, like the Vox Valvetronix. it has a tube preamp with a modeling power and can do a lot of stuff well. if that's what you want

Practice amps are for wimps, rehearsals are for those who don't know how to rock.

Re: Decent all rounder amp

there's plenty of amps that will do this man fine w/ out haveing to blow an obscene amount of money.

Re: Decent all rounder amp

Suggesting a Bogner to someone who's been playing for a year and a half is... one of the dumbest things I have ever heard. This person wants reasonable advice, not someone telling them their favorite amp they just bought.

I'd go for a Vox Valvetronix, they have a decent number of options and effects and sound quite good. Very good amps for someone looking to upgrade from a practice amp. They are probably one of the most versatile amps around.

A modeling amp will do a lot of things for you. Vox are doing well here. Line 6 can be decent as well. For a tube amp, if you can deal with one channel a Epi Jr. or one of the newer Epis may do what you want as well. Worth a try. I like the Genz Benz El Diablo 60C. It runs about $1100 new, I picked mine up for about $750. It is the most versitile 2 channel amp I have have played.

You should be ashamed of yourself, openly admiting to the fact that money is more important to you than your tone.

Re: Decent all rounder amp

I was thinking about a Vox Valvetronix AD60VTX. It is at the top end of my price range but do you guys know if it's a good amp?

IMO this isn't really the time or place to start a war. do that on your own time

Dude, you really need to work on you sense of humor, if you thought that I was serious in ALL of my previous posts in this thread you are a bit too serious for a rock n' roll forum. Just out of curiosity, are you a big nirvana fan ?

Be nice. Before any of us say it's a bad idea, let's find out how serious he is.

The XTC is a bit much, but some Bogner models are a keeper. They retain value if you want to re-sell (Metropolis, Shiva, Caveman, Uber come to mind). At the same time, you get the best tone possible.

I have friends who are sax players who went from a Nundy to a Selmer Mark VI as their second sax. A great sax like that can last a lifetime.

I have friends that went into the USC Jazz program with vintage Gibsons - hey they were dead serious as players. One of those guys was touring with Ray Charles after playing 3 years - so it IS possible.

If you want a cheaper idea - think about used Rivera amps - esp the Knucklhead series 2 or Quiana etc. Depends on how much gain you want. Out of prod Mesas are roadworthy AND sound GREAT - Heartbreaker, Maverick, etc come to mind.

I would not steer a serious player to modeling amps unless that's their "thing". I play with a good guitar player who uses a Line 6, but I still think he would sound better thru a Bogner.

It's really hard to make reccommendations without knowing a few things:

What kind of amp do you have now?

What kind of music styles do you like and want to play? Are you playing leads, or just rhythm? Are you playing solo. or with a band?

Are you a bedroom performer, or are you looking for an amp to play onstage?

Are you looking for a basic no frills amp; one with all the bells and whistles; or a solid professional quality amp?

What kind of budget do you have to work with? (I'm in the USA, so translate into USD for me, please!)

These are really important questions that need to be answered. Take heart--if you go through the process of discovery--it can help lead you to your goals, and make the journey easier. Often times, self-definition is the hardest part.

Alright.
At the moment i am playing a crappy little squier SP-10 with treble, bass and an overdrive channel. I play any type of rock and some metal, and basically any song i hear and like. Playing leads and rhythm, not with a band (but wouldn't mind once i get a bit better) Want a quality pro amp and have a budget of about $1000 USD. Thanks very much
