Deftones + Axe FX = lack of balls and cut

Re: Deftones + Axe FX = lack of balls and cut

I've seen Meshuggah live twice and I'm gonna have to agree with the OP with the "pre-recorded" feel of the sound. In fact I prefer their tone when they were using Valvestates and JCM800s way back in the day, when Jens was still playing guitar in the band, but that's just me I guess.

Meh... that Meshuggah sounds like Sepultura cleaned up and polished without the attitude. I understand it's what's bands like and people are into... but it all feels and sounds too clean and no grit or punch. I mean, my balls tingled at the Deftones show... but because of the Bass. When I saw Slayer, the Guitar was punching me... in a good way. Even Halestorm... I swear I could feel the guitar and it just sounded right... Hell... I saw Panic at The Friggin Disco with my wife and even THEY had real amps and yep... sounded good, and they played some old Kansas and earned my respect, but that's a different can o' worms lol.

I just don't like overly processed clean sounds lol.

Yeah, I saw Coheed a few weeks ago and they slayed. Their tone was at least as good as Russian Circles, and he was using great tube amps with a LP Custom.

A good amp just does something I've yet to hear from any modeler. Note: Vai and Petrucci use only the effects.

I wonder how does he scream and manage to keep his voice and ability all this time over the years?

Probably by taking care of it.

Do you have one yet? I swear you've been talking about these amps for like 2 years.

Not yet. My Dual Rec Multiwatt does a great job but coming up with the $3000+ for one of those things has been a toughie.

I just can't get into the live sound of an Axe Fx. I've seen BTBAM twice with them, and compared to their mesa stack days it sounded like crap. Very thin, and lacked balls. This was at 2 different venues. Saw Animals as Leaders 4 times. 3 days in a row at 3 different venues. The sound sucked at the two House of Blues shows, but was kick ass at Club Nokia(the best live sound in LA). I've seen Periphery twice, and preferred the sound with their Engls. I guess it really depends on the venue... that said i'd still love to get one for home recording someday

I think a lot of it has to do with the soundguy. We have been micing huge amps for years and running anything direct takes a VERY different setup.

I'd not sure how I'd do it live. I'd probably run a good power amp through some good neutral-sounding cabs so i could have an onstage reference and then have a direct out to the PA to eliminate the need for a mic.

Re: Deftones + Axe FX = lack of balls and cut

saw like 15 bands yesterday at SWSX in Austin, went to all the ((((((((((((((((DOOM)))))))))))))))))) festivals

there is no way an axefxII would cut it, I mean there is no interactivity between the player and the amp feedback. no analogue sounds. no dynamics. Further, a lot of the bands only had two 15" speakers as the PA, so the drums were not even mic'd for outdoor performances, so they needed the full stackz...

still, its the best out there, would be great for the death metalz :headbang:

Re: Deftones + Axe FX = lack of balls and cut

Part of the whole package really is looking at yout amp and getting that 'vibe' out of it during a show.

Lack of decent PA will kill it. Otherwise it would be fine. 99% of the people (including most of us) wouldnt know the difference if it was set up and run well.

Thats an issue with the player. I dont rely on my amp to inspire me to play.

Me I like to feel the amp hit me in the back if possible although if I stand to close my ears might start to ring. Im sure the AxeFX is a great machine when in the proper hands but I prefer a simpler more familiar set up.
