i'm actually gonna go against the grain here & - some points for the line 6 & the boss

see, real tape delay/slap echo was an analog effect, it wasn't nearly as clean or clear of a sound as all of the digital delays out there now. If you hear any recordings using an old echoplex you know what i mean. Both the line 6 and the boss do the digital thing well, but they're not great at simulating that analog sound

and once again, IMO, the danelectro will get you closest if you're on a budget. I've owned one of the little BLT slap echo pedals & it was awesome till it broke, i've played the dan-echo and on the echo setting it gets much closer than the line 6 or boss, and the reel tape echo will get you closest out of those 3

I have an old DOD FX90 analog delay for the things that only analog can really do well, slapback and spacey type sounds and I run it into a DD-20 for the things it can do well. Really love the modulated (chorusey delay) setting on the DD-20 and it can do a Leslie-ish sound on that setting too.

Oh man ain't that setting great? It really nails that clean Eric Johnson sparkle if you're playing a strat through a nice clean amp.

how about the maxon/ibanez AD-9s.
i've seen keeleys expressions mods for the AD9s and i know it takes up space, but i am rather interested in it. Its $399 but it sems pretty cool.

Have you actually tried them all out?
And are you going to be getting more pedals than this? If you're planning to have several pedals, a multieffects pedal might be a better value for the money....

if you JUST want tape delay sounds get the dano, it's the best at it

if you want every type of delay go for line 6 or boss
