I picked up ABB's '03 Beacon concert on DVD the other day and noticed that Derek was using what I think is a Randall MTS RM100M. Anyone ever try one or better yet have one for an extended review?

Yeah I'm interested in that too because I'll probably buy one pretty soon! I think I'll go for a blackface and recto module.
I did notice the lack of reverb on the 100W head. The 50W does have reverb though...

thought this might interest you. found it on the allman brothers website:

Derek Trucks, electric guitar
Gibson SG electric guitar (tuned to open E)
Marshall 1959SLP Plexi reissue amp in Randall case
Marshall 1959SLP Plexi reissue amp
4×12 Marshall cabinet
Effects: none
Dunlop glass slides
D'Addario strings

I have 2 of the Randall MTS RM4 preamps, but not the 100 watt head. I run the pre through a VHT poweramp and the tone is amazing. Burkwieser has 2 RM4's also. Try it out at your local music shop.

What you're hearing when you listen to the truly great players, like Derek, is MUSIC...real MUSIC. He'd sound awesome through a Silvertone. It's hard not to confuse Derek's genius and creativity with the gear he's using. The gear has very little to do with it, IMO. What you're really drawn to is Derek's creativity and imagination...and his personality. Just my opinion, but he's one of those guys who is NOT a gearhead...he's a real musician. Lew

I'd love the 100 watt head with the blackface, plexi and rect modules. That would be a killer amp!

To answer the question- I have no clue...

Peace easy, bros.

i agree completely that he would sound good through anything. however, i think that his tone sounds great through his rig. look at the no pedals.......

Re: Derek Trucks and Randall MTS RM100M

When I saw him he was playing through a blackface Super Reverb...Derek played the night before with the Allman Bros and then I saw him with his band at Etown...a locally produced national radio show here in Boulder at the Boulder Theatre. I was very impressed! His playing seemed ego free and super melodic and creative.

Re: Derek Trucks and Randall MTS RM100M

Derek is jaw dropping amazing. I have never seen anyone do some of the stuff he plays on slide.

That said, I always have prefered Warren Haynes' tone. Although Derek is a great player, his tone is smaller than Warren's to my ears.

Re: Derek Trucks and Randall MTS RM100M

I like them both...but Derek comes across, to me at least, as the more humble and more joyful spirit. I think that's at least part of what I like about his playing. Lew

Re: Derek Trucks and Randall MTS RM100M

When the Beacon DVD was released there was a lot discussion about Derek's amp - unfortunately, a lot of what I found and posted was on the old Forum.

From what I know, the Randall was hand-made. It is based on Marshall Super Lead specs from the late '50's and is very decked out. It is definitely not a stock Randall.

He sure gets great tone from it, though, doesn't he? :notworthy

Haynes and Derek are two of the most humble people in the industry. Neither have attitudes and both love to play guitar. To me, Haynes has so much positive energy about his playing that it really engulfs you as a listener and audience member. Derek is very mesmorizing (sp?), too. He doesn't make any facial expressions and plays slide like a madman. As Lew said, he definitely has a laid back and joyful feel to him.

I've really enjoyed Warren with the ABB over the last 15 years - what I've come to discover, though, is that his magic is really with Gov't Mule. I saw a lot of their shows when they were coming up through the mid-90's. They were nothing short of phenomenal. That's not to say that he doesn't sound great with the ABB, but his true creative spirit shines through with the Mule.

As for Derek, I love listening to his own band when they do tunes like "Kickin' Back". They are creative Samba-like songs that have great energy. Great guitar tone, too.

I could really go on for days about all this, so I'll stop and let someone else have a go at it!

Re: Derek Trucks and Randall MTS RM100M

I've seen Derek live 3 times (got to meet him twice), and I've got two words to describe him: fire and soul. Finally, a real guitar hero has emerged! Seeing Derek gives you a sense of what it must have been like to see Clapton, Duane, Hendrix, etc back in the day.
