Describe your tone

Re: Describe your tone

i honestly have no idea ... if there is a way to be unique yet nondescript all at the same time, that's it ...

my current band situation is so focused on stabilizing the personnel roster and trying to learn songs instead of refining sound, that i seem to have lost focus on my own tone's evolution

i aspire to being chamelion-like in doing covers, at least to the point of 'strongly suggesting' the original artist, that i havent spent alot of time developing my own 'tonal signature' ... i'd like to say that my voice captures elements of carlos santana and larry carlton and mark knopfler and SRV and eric johnson and the edge and alex lifeson and andy summers and pat metheny and mike stern and allan holdsworth ... but it doesnt ... yet

cheers

Re: Describe your tone

I've always aimed for a Noel Gallagher-type sound, as I'm such a massive Oasis fan, but I got my Epi 335 guitar because other bands use it - especially BRMC. So, mid-90s Oasis is my main influence tone wise - clean/ever-so-slightly overdriven I egt into BRMC or Radiohead rhythms. The Verve are an influence too.

At the moment, most of my stuff is played like this -
Epi 335 (with a SD pup in the bridge soon!!!) > V-amp 2 set to 'crunch', Bass 10 oclock Mid and treble 2 oclock, amp presence and guitar tone both rolled off, into a Fender 650 clean channel. Gain level is absolutely anything I want it to be!

Re: Describe your tone

"My" tone is a variety of different things, but really the '60 RI Gibson Les Paul Special DC has been my main guitar for the past few weeks and I find it fits "me" the best out of any guitar I've ever played.

Tone 1: Blues, Jazz and Fusion. Robben Ford is IT as far as great blues tone. That Dumble just kicks and sings like nobody's business. The Vox AC-30 side of my Fargen Epic 30 DC combined with the neck P90 on my '60 RI Gibson with the Clay Jones OD does a close impression. I use it also for fusion. For jazz, just take out the Clay Jones and I get a very old school jazz tone with just the guitar and amp.

Tone 2: Clean rhythm. I love that shimmer or jangle that the right amp gives. I also like my clean tone to cut through the mix and I love a nice full spectrum. The EL84 power section on the Vox AC-30 side of the Fargen Epic 30 DC does it for me. All I need to do is set my guitar for the middle position and roll back the neck volume slightly if I want it to be a bit thinner.

Tone 3: Disortion/Lead. Listen to "Superstar Car Wash" era Goo Goo Dolls and that's what I love; I love that thick Marshall type tone. I nail it with the Marshall JTM-45 side of my Fargen Epic 30 DC. Flip the toggle to bridge and bam, I get great crunch and sustain. When I want a smooth, fat thick lead tone, I step on my Pro Analog Dual Drive and it takes care of the rest.

My Grosh is wonderful at nailing various strat tones and is versatile enough to cut through with rock material, but the simplicity of the '60RI Gibson is working great right now and giving me all the tones I need!

Re: Describe your tone

i dunno......with my explorer shaped guitars i get a Metallica/ new megadeth tone, and with my viper (with the H3, and in Db) i get a really good down tone thats a lot like their first album. my guitar with the invader is losing the invader soon, so i cant comment there

Hehe ... Nuni was just being cheeky!
That's how we say we love each other ... :D

Re: Describe your tone

My distorted sounds are very aggressive, tight, and thick. Think Metallica's AJFA...

My cleans are crystal clear, bright, round, and dimensional. Think a little thicker than John Petrucci gets on I&W.

Re: Describe your tone

Re: Describe your tone

For my current needs:

My clean(ish) tone - BB King meets Steve Cropper

My dirty(ish) tone - Paul Kossoff meets Brian Robertson

If I need another - a more dirty(ish) tone, Billy Duffy meets Ace Frehley meets Luke Morley

Re: Describe your tone

clean= hendrixy strat neck tone
dirty= old school marshall thin lizzy-sabbath tone
more dirt= sykes/moore/lynch!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Describe your tone

Clean: Sparkly-ish, can't describe tone to well.
Pushed(between OD and Clean): Very gritty, amazing for blues.
Half Gain: Very classic rock sounding, still maintains gritty-ness.
7 to Cranked: Sabbath, think first album... i swear this amp is perect for that.

Re: Describe your tone

My tone is what you get when you load a LP rip off with a Custom and a '59 and plug it into the low gain side of a cranked 2204. ;)

Re: Describe your tone

For blusey stuff I use a pretty crunchy marshall type sound but most other things i use and a semi-thick santana type tone

Re: Describe your tone

What I strive for, and what I achieve are, of course, two different things. However, I'm happy with both. Since I play through SS and modellers, my tone is clean and very rich with texture. (I know, thats the opposite of what most folks would think.) Its because I'm playing through a nice set of studio monitors, complete with midrange and tweeters, that I get a lot of high-frequency components, (upper harmonics), that I'm guessing many would lose, going through 12" speakers alone. Maybe. ;)

What I strive for, if I had to nail it down to one sound, would be what Danny Gatton gets on 88 Elmira St., in the song, "In My Room."

Absolutely Heavenly.

Re: Describe your tone

My tone is slowly coming into it's own. My main hi gain rhythm tone is very reminiscent of Mark Tremonti's (who'd a thought-same bridge pup thru same wah pedal into same amp). He is my main influence and it is what I'm striving for. My cleans are full and rich but still not quite shimmery enough. My lead tone is what I need to work on. I'm searching for Slash's lead tone (hence the APIIH in the neck) but I think the recto is limiting me, not quite as liquid as a Marshall IMO.

Re: Describe your tone

Percussive bass, ripping mids, screaming highs.
A little EVH'ish in its own right, while beeing a tad thinner and more articulate.
Thats the tone I dial in most of the time, but i can seem to dial about anything in now.

Re: Describe your tone

Strat SRV/Trower/Hendrix/KWS/Mayer
Les Paul Gibbons/Kossoff/Slash/Wylde/Moore/Hetfield

Best described by this phrase from my favorite movie, Pulp Fiction

"And the hand of god shall strike you down with GREAT vengeance and FURIOUS anger"
