Dial-a-Duncan (Anyone know anything about this guitar?)

Re: Dial-a-Duncan (Anyone know anything about this guitar?)

I think that is a fantastic idea, and I really wish I had access to that sum***** so I wouldn't have to spend weeks agonizing over pickup purchases and/or spend weeks swapping 3 or 4 different ones in and out. Every guitar store should have one of these in stock!

Re: Dial-a-Duncan (Anyone know anything about this guitar?)

I saw that guitar last month in the ESP booth at the Tokyo Musical Instruments Fair. ESP is SD's Japanese distributor. The guitar wasn't hooked up. It was for display only and had a "Do Not Touch" sign on it.

Re: Dial-a-Duncan (Anyone know anything about this guitar?)

thats kinda disappointing

Re: Dial-a-Duncan (Anyone know anything about this guitar?)

Maybe it was for 'looks only'. I'd imagine some sort of contraption inside like a circular switch w/ contacts, but all of that would have to be fabricated. And it would only give you an idea of what those pickups sounded like in that guitar.

Re: Dial-a-Duncan (Anyone know anything about this guitar?)

It wouldn't be rocket science to make it really work, either with contacts or limit the rotation and just use a separate switch for each pickup. It's an awesome idea.
And it would be great for comparison purposes, even if the specific tones would only apply to that particular guitar. When I am elected Emperor of the World I shall decree that all guitar shops have one of those on hand.

Thanks for the info.

Re: Dial-a-Duncan (Anyone know anything about this guitar?)

Be cool if the stores did have a working model like this so one could test different pickups. Many have stompbox test platforms..

Re: Dial-a-Duncan (Anyone know anything about this guitar?)

From my perspective it would benefit SD and a guitar company (this one looks like Schecter) to build these and send them to the top performing Duncan dealers. I mean, if you went into a shop and played 6 Duncan's or saw 6 others sitting on a shelf, in all likelihood what would you buy? (Think about the average consumer)

Re: Dial-a-Duncan (Anyone know anything about this guitar?)

All of them could be live all the time
Only the one under the strings would make sound
Other than that buzz when one was horked up
Which one is that?
Is it.......
No this on........
No wait.........

Re: Dial-a-Duncan (Anyone know anything about this guitar?)

I could see this being a nightmare to maintain at a store. And it would have 6 pickups you have no interest in trying. The guitar would be completely the wrong style for you, too. And then the complaints would come in. There is no good way of trying out pickups before you buy, unless it is in your particular guitar with your rig.

With pickups of complete different nature it would be ok. Full shreds next to p90s etc. It would give the player some idea of the overall difference between pickups. It's never the same at home but imo it's still a decent comparison method that cuts out all the tone wood/amp/cable/pedal debate.

If it was designed in the right way it should be basic to switch out pickups in it. Maybe they designed it so after a few turns the wires get so tangled they all snap off? hehe

Re: Dial-a-Duncan (Anyone know anything about this guitar?)

Seems like a great way to demo different pickups.... (saw on Facebook, crossposted so many times I have no idea where it came from)

W.T.F.???? It looks like the old Roto-Phone my grandfather had!!! I guess if it works as intended then it could be a fun guitar? Although I probably wouldn't be gigging with it...

I don't remember who made it, but about ten years ago I saw a guitar where the pickups were attached to electronics modules that installed through the back of the guitar. You'd need to attach each pickup to it's own module, but a swap was as simple as loosening a couple screws, sliding out the old pickup, sliding in the new, and re-tightening. The whole process took maybe 2 minutes and you didn't need to touch the strings.

Re: Dial-a-Duncan (Anyone know anything about this guitar?)

I remember that as well. The fact that it's not around leads you to believe that pickup swapping gizmos aside, the base guitar needs to be good.

Re: Dial-a-Duncan (Anyone know anything about this guitar?)

And at a store, the base guitar would need to be maintained, which isn't a high priority at a store. I would think by now, if this was a viable idea to sell/demo pickups, it would be commonplace. Most stores don't carry anything but JB/Jzz/59s, much less any other models. That, to me, is a bigger problem.

Gibson had a LP like that for a while, but I think it was a "Store Only" piece, although I could easily be wrong...
