They made Melody Makers like that with single P-90s from 2003 to 2006. They came in a kind of "satin" (read: un-buffed) red, black, or yellow finish.

I'm willing to bet that with a good setup, new nut, and a good polish with some elbow grease you could work one into a real fun rock plank.

They made them for a lot longer than that but the specs in general do vary a good bit...

The guitar in that pic has the faded finish and is likely from the 03-06 period and likely has some kind of funky wood used for the body...likely not mahogany.

That model, specifically the "Les Paul Melody Maker," was made from 03 to 06. If you wanna talk about how long they've been making all the various Melody Maker varieties, we're going back to 1959!

But I digress - you're right about the woods used. The body is likely jacareuba (a common South American hardwood) and the neck is spanish cedar.

Thats right...Im just talkin about the P-90 MM's...those came into action in the 80's sometime. I was in a group very for a very short time but the other guitar player had well over 2 dozen P-90 Melody Makers all from various years..they were cool but I will admit those ones from 03-06 with the ceader necks were lacking a bit of the balls the earlier ones had.

If you don't want it tell him I'll buy it for $250 right now. I've wanted one of those for a while. I can only play lighter guitars this is one on the need to own list.

I called the guy. Gonna meet him this weekend. Thanks for the info guys. This was the first MM I had seen with a P90. I thought all of them had the small singles. Maybe this will cure my P90 gas for a littlw while..............

If the neck is straight and I like the way it plays and decide it's a keeper, I'm going to have to refinish it. I wouldn't mind a nice tobacco burst. Have no clue how to do a burst, so maybe I will get a thread going and get some of you in the know guys to help me out.

Re: Did Gibson Make Any Of The New Melody Makers With A P90?

I just thought of somehting. Does the Melody Makers have the same scale neck as other Gibsons, like the LP or is it a short scale neck?

That one right there is the same 24 3/4" scale.

Good. I hate short scale stuff. I'm hoping it's got a neck alot like either of my LP's in shape. I figure if I like the guitar enough, I will sand the back of the neck and try a refin on it. May not be able to do a vintage burst. Someone told me the red they used on them is a stain and went through the wood and only a solid color will cover it. I have no clue, I've never done a trans refin before. Just paint. If worse comes to worse, I can always make a Dixie Jr. out of it..............

Re: Did Gibson Make Any Of The New Melody Makers With A P90?

Dude finally called me back. Said he had to go out of town for family is why he hadn't gotten back with me. I'm suppossed to meet him late tomorrow. I'm hoping the guitar is in good playing shape and doesn't have any issues. I'm also hoping to be able to get it redone in a tobaccoburst if I like it enough to keep. Also, can anyone hook me up with the Les Paul MODEL script logo for the headstock?

Re: Did Gibson Make Any Of The New Melody Makers With A P90?

The funky woods those are made out of and the complete lack of quality control (fretwork mainly, anyone who complains about the finish of a cheap guitar is being a pussy) kind of ruins them. You might as well try it out, for that price it might be decent just to have as a beater. Judging by what I've seen of your collection I wouldn't expect it would be up to your standards, so don't be expecting much.

You know the bodies are very thin on these right? It looks good from the pic you posted but when you look at em from the side you`ll see how very thin they are.
