Did I pay too much for this guitar?

Re: Did I pay too much for this guitar?

But what is "better"... and make sure its something available in europe for that price. Many things that guys in the US say are "better" even used stuff you cant find in europe at those prices.

Hell here used American standard strats sell for close to MSRP in america. If the shipping and import taxes didnt rape you, it would be worth it to shop in America.

Excellent point...just pulled up London's Craigslist and the cheapest Strat I found was a Squire for roughly $450 (US.)

By better I was thinking used Japanese/Korean guitars that typically have better Quality Control than the Chinese guitars...

Re: Did I pay too much for this guitar?

Well, if you love the guitar and it does what you wanted it to for the price

I don't know if my English is so bad but apparently it doesn't, lol. But oh well, maybe I had too high expectations, or just bad luck. Who knows.

I just filled out the 'money back' form and I already feel better.

First I'd like to say hi since I'm new to this forum. You can call me Harris (that's how my username is pronounced).

Hi, welcome. Your user name is actually pronounced HAR-eese though. It is Greek.

Carry on.

Re: Did I pay too much for this guitar?

Χάρη, I just read about the discount. Thomann never ever puts an item on discount unless it has a problem. The bigger the discount the bigger the problem. 45% was the discount you said? I'd return the item and steer clear off Thomann. Go to a real shop and play a real guitar. Buying online for 300 EUR will get you bouncing guitars between you and the online shops to eternity.

Exactly. When I order from Thomann I steer clear of their guitars and anything B-stock. I have no problems ordering a pedal, case, cables, strings, etc from them if I can't find them here in Greece though. Anything that would be a pain to return though... forget about it! If I lived in Germany I might reconsider because it's probably pretty easy to return stuff to Thomann in Germany but for the rest of Europe it's costly, time consuming and not worth it imo.

Re: Did I pay too much for this guitar?

One of my favorite guitars was made in China, and it might just be the best playing guitar in the arsenal. It's the J5 Squier Tele, with an Invader in the bridge. Thing is beast. It was $399, but I got it for a bit less, on sale/no tax/free shipping. It's better than my Korean Schecter, by a smidge. It's not as fancy (binding, inlays), but it's built better - tighter tolerances and perfection (barely). And I'm Korean, so a bit biased.

Of course, I've had American guitars much worse, although different, and American ones better too. Something about the price though. I don't think I would pay more than $400 for China, $800 for Korean, $1200 for Japan, $1500 for American, etc. Just because there's no need to, while getting a very good example.

I've ordered from Thomann and never had any problems with any of my orders. I also steer clear of B-stock. If they posted the real pictures of the item in question then I might reconsider. Thomann has only the stock picture of every item.

Re: Did I pay too much for this guitar?

wouldn't this be hariz? HAR-is might do it :)

It would be to those of us in Greece but to most English speakers from the west they pronounce "i" in the words harris or hariz a little different than it is pronounced here.

Re: Did I pay too much for this guitar?

Does it really matter? We are on a forum none of us will actually be pronouncing his name out loud. If the dude wants me to type Harris I'll type Harris even if it isn't the proper pronunciation.

Ironically, 666 (as beloved of Iron Maiden and countless horror movies) is a mistranslation from Ancient Greek.

Might be. Similar misinterpretations between Greek and Latin are numerous in history. Maybe the bad number is 616.

Re: Did I pay too much for this guitar?

It amuses me when Guitars made in China today get dissed by the tone snobs. There is a lot of great product coming out of there which is affordable to those who can't afford the high prices for say, a Gibson LP or Fender MIA Strat. If you're happy with the guitar , then play it. If not, then get your money back and invest in either a Epiphone or a Squier. heck even Fender has their Modern player line, which is made in China and are good guitars for the $$$$ !

Re: Did I pay too much for this guitar?

In this thread, the issue is not the outright merit of the OP's guitar but whether he was ripped off by the mail order vendor.

Without seeing the original advertising, it is difficult to offer meaningful comment one way or the other.

If, as has been suggested, the guitar was sold at a heavy discount SPECIFICALLY because it was flawed, it seems churlish to complain that the guitar arrived with flaws.

Thomann will remove listings for B stock items as soon as they are sold. The fact that the OP says the link disappeared right after he bought would fit with it being a blem item.

I'm not, but I guess you're another person who didn't read the topic. Oh well, the only good thing there was on the guitar were the seymour duncan pickups. But I would rather pay 200 bucks and get a pair of blackouts. I would get more for 100 euros less (since those on the guitar were pretty cheap).

Exactly, but I guess the problem is solved. I'm sending the guitar back tomorrow.
