Did I revieve a faulty guitar?

Hey everyone. I just got my Dean EVO Dragster, about a month ago. It sounds pretty good for only a $400 guitar. But at the 13th fret, on the E and A strings, i get some horedndous buzz. And this is out of the box by the way. Could it have been sent poorly setup? Or should I bring it to a shop, maybe there's a problem with it? Thanks for the help.

I would contact Dean and let them know about the problem. Since the guitar is new, they should cover the cost of having one of their authorized dealers set the guitar up for you. Or at least, that's what I would expect if I bought a new guitar from a reputable company and had a problem with it right away.

Absolutely it could have been. Unless you drop serious wads of cash for a guitar, it's not very uncommon for a new guitar to need a complete setup. And even if it's setup properly, it's rarely setup to the individual specs of the new owner. I'd take it to the local shop or guitar tech and ask for a complete setup. Explain about the buzz, let them know what gauge strings you prefer, and what kind of action (string height) you prefer. It'll cost you about $40 but they'll tweak everything just the way you'll like it. And congrats on the new guitar.

Brand new guitars, even $400 guitars, shouldn't buzz...unless you have the action set alot lower than "normal". Sounds like you need the frets leveled, recrowned and polished in that area. If it's new, your warranty should cover it. Whether the repair person is capable of doing a professional job...well...that's a differant matter. I learned to do this kind of work myself because I got tired of hacks screwing up my guitars. I'm pretty fussy tho. Lew
