Did we decide 10K Humbuckers are the ideal?

I remember when the Brobucker came out the idea of 10K HBs were kinda the rage on this board.

Now a year or 2 later I am following up to see if that's the truth. Yes, I know DC Resistance is one of many factors, but I guess we are assuming A2 or A%, 42 gauge, pups.

The Brobucker is among a few overwound 10ks like the VHPAF from Dimarzio, WCRs, etc etc


So did we finally decide 10K HBs = warmth, versatilty, and crunch that cleans up? Did they make you wanna give up your JB's?:scratchch

No - we decided any further discussion of 10k pups was VERBOTEN!

That brobucker thing was just to get it out your system. Now move along...

I like mine around 13k for the bridge, 10k for neck sounds good to me though.

I have a set of WCR Fillmores that fit those specs in my Hamer Mirage II. Great pickups! I think resistance is just a meaningless number though. I have a set of Aldrich humbucker (9K neck/17K bridge) in a guitar and they're not the compressed, hi-gain monster pickups that the resistance might suggest. There's alot more that goes into making a pickup than just the resistance spec.

I too agree that resistance is only one of many factors that make up an axe's overall tone.

That said, some of my favorites do hover around those specs. The PATB-3, Demon, and S Deco are all fantastic pickups, IMHO.

I thought it was agreed that the ideal pickup is the one that sounds the best.

I don't get the fixation with ~10k winds. If someone wants more mids, then they should just wind a pickup or degauss one so it has more mids. And if they want more output than an 8k PAF has.... well, pickups have height adjustment screws, and we're all running these through amplifiers anyways, right?

Mark Morton from Lamb of God doesn't seem to have problems coaxing heavy distorted tones out of his 7-8k Duncan 59's, anyways.

YES!
I have all sorts of pickups in my guitars- from stock Tele's, Phat Cats, Gibson, Lil 59, Modified Gibson. Each guitar is set up differently, they are tools for me. Each one has a specific application.

I remember reading the JB was one of the most popular pickups.... so wouldn't 16.4K be all the rage? Lol.

There's more to high output than purely distorting the signal. They behave differently too, and ceramics even more so. Since ceramic mags are usually quite a bit hotter the pups they are in are usually hotter than PAF's as well. both have their place.

I don't remember that 10k was an ideal. It seems to me that there was a perceived *hole* in the Duncan line up - that is no real medium output humbuckers. It was a great idea. I really don't think that any of the other forum pickups have really filled a void in the Duncan line up. YMMV

This is the thing, though. It's not 8k of 42awg vs 14k of 42awg. It's 8k of 42awg vs. 14k of 43awg. I don't see the big gap here.

People toss around 8k and 14k as if they're wound with the same gauge wire...

I got a few bridge buckers in the 21K range... they sound twice as good as 10k :cheese:

i dunno man, i dig my brobucker, and wish there were more options in the 10k range

i mean 59's are cool & all but a 10k PAF-type in the bridge is just... an awesome idea

It already exists, even though not many are familiar with it. The S-Deco is a custom shop pup and, imo, is one of the best sounding bridge pups out there. Not exactly 10k, but at 11.5k it is close enough...

10k is my favourite winding for all bridge pickups - i've always had good experiences with them wound to that point.

What are '57 classics wound to? They are one of my favourite humbuckers in a bridge!

Did we ever confirm that the Brobucker is awg42 and the Demon is awg43?

That's a huge difference in 10 Kohm humbuckers right there ;)
