Difference between 59 and Pearly Gates?

Re: Difference between 59 and Pearly Gates?

the pearly gates is a little hotter if my memory serves me correctly! :)

Re: Difference between 59 and Pearly Gates?

I believe that both are similar in output. I find the PG to have more of a mid/treble tone than the 59.

What's the sound difference between the (bridge) 59 and the Pearly Gates? :smoker:  :saeek:

I have tried both, and prefer the tone of the Pearly Gates.

Re: Difference between 59 and Pearly Gates?

Slightly more bass and slightly less mids from the 59. Slightly more mids and slightly less bass from the PG. The PG has a higher DC Resistance indicating more turns of copper wire...probably to keep the perceived output up there with the 59 as the weaker alnico 2 magnet of the PG might tend to make the PG seem slightly lower in output otherwise.

The PG has that Texas-sizzle, that biting sharp edge. Check out the soundclips on seymourduncan.com

Have you tried both in the same guitar? If so, does one seem to have more treble or more extended highs to you? Or does the amount of treble of the PG and 59 seem about the same only with the PG having a little more edge or sizzle to it?

I've never tried both in the same guitar.

The PG has a harder edge and to it, but not more highs. The lows are a bit tighter (to my ear) as well. It seems to me that with the PG you have more control over how you shape a not simply by how you pick and fret than with the 59.

I did feel the 59 was more forgiving of a guitar's tonal inadequacies, though (that is, it sounds good in more guitars than the Pearly does).

I pretty much agree. That ability to shape the note seems to be inherent in good alnico 2 pickups.

The 59 has a little more bass so the PG might sound tighter in the bass just because it has slightly less bass.

When I listen to the sound samples, the 59 sounds slightly brighter to me...but just slightly. Probably because the 59 has less mids masking and competing with the highs.

Re: Difference between 59 and Pearly Gates?

Hi guys--

I have a 59 for the bridge that I was going to put in my Gibson doubleneck in the bridge, but I like what I'm hearing about the PG's and Seth's. I just may get a Seth or PG and test them all in the guitar. I like the description of the Seth Lover the best though. I had the 59 in an Epiphone LP and it completely transformed the guitar from cardboard to tone machine. I've heard though that the 59 sounds very bright in thinner guitars like the SG, which is essentially what the doubleneck is. What a wiring MESS inside THAT guitar, let me tell ya! :smack:

I used to have a 59 on the neck of a Guild S-100 (SG shaped guitar) and the tone was just amazing: articulated, never muffled on distortion, jazzy when clean... I moved this one to the bridge (It was a neck model on the bridge) and it was too bright for my tastes. The tone quality was great too but not for me.

Re: Difference between 59 and Pearly Gates?

Lew,

No, I never tried both in the same guitar. I only tried the PGs at the store, they were loaded in a used axe. I immediatly noticed that "texas-sizzle" I was talking about, but I cant comment much more on its other characteristics.

Re: Difference between 59 and Pearly Gates?

Well, after the Ultimate Tele thread and the Ultimate Stratocaster thread, I've decided to treat myself to the Ultimate Les Paul! I might already have it with the Tom Holmes humbuckers currently in my '00 Les Paul 1959 Historic. But I'm going to change them over the next month or so and hear what my guitar sounds like with Seth Lovers, Antiquitys and Pearly Gates. Maybe try a set a 59's too. You guys will be the first to know the results! I'll start next week. Lew

Re: Difference between 59 and Pearly Gates?

What do you guys think of a mix--Seth neck, Antiquity bridge and vice-versa? Why would I want to do this you ask? I got a set of Antiquities that have an all creme bridge and a zebra neck. I may be able to get a set of Seths that have an all creme neck and a zebra bridge. I'd put the all creme on one side and two zebras on the other. The deciding factor would be which bridge would sound hotter for the six. From the sounds of it, either of these pickups would give the hot, hard rocking and rippin blues tones of Jimmy Page, early Rush & Aerosmith, Kiss etc... :smoker: :offtopic:
