Differences between 80's Tokai LS50, 60, 70 and 80?

I was just browsing the Tokai registy looking at these models. How does build quality and playability differ in these models?

Re: Differences between 80's Tokai LS50, 60, 70 and 80?

First off, the number represents the list price in japan yen.
In other words LS85Q is LP - Standard - 85,000 yen - Quilt top.

On new MIJ models the
LS70 would be plain maple carved top.
LS80f flame veneer on plain maple carved top.
LS85Q quilt veneer on plain maple carved top.

Build quality is the same. Just different tops.
LS70 may have 3 piece back instead of 2 piece.

Now year plays a big role.
Over time price increases changed the names of the Tokai guitars.
So, what was a LS75Q in 2004 is now a LS85Q.
What was a LS60 is now a LS70.
In 1986 that LS70 was a LS50.
So, you really need to check the models year of manufacture.
By 1999 the LS50 (actually LS50-D) denoted a bolt on neck.
Todays LS50 is actually ALS50 and denotes MIK instead of MIJ.

Again, year plays a big role.
So, it's good to go over to the Tokai registry.
Go to dates and IDs.
Then look at the catalog years to see what year represents what model numbering, and how the descriptions match.

I know it can be confusing.
But, I hope this helps you a little.

So that's why the names differ like that, I didn't know.

I read on the Tokaiforum before I imported mine that todays LS70 is basically more '58 Les Paul while LS80 is more '59 Les Paul. LS70s are plaintops and should have a little thicker neck profile while LS80s are flametops with a just a little thinner neck profile maybe something else than that I don't know as well.

Don't know how about the 1980's models though.

Well, I just bought an '81 LS-50 for just under $700 shipped. What do you guys think?

Ah damn! That one looks killer, major congrats to the ownership of a Love Rock :bigthumb:

I didn't like the doublecreams at first but they've grown on me so I'm considering double creams for mine when I change pickups on it!

Congrats! I came REALLY close to pulling the trigger on that one! The tuners are prolly what killed it for me..they def make a difference in tone vs. the vintage style.

I love my ' 03 LS75Q..except for the ugly @$$ "q" part :chairfall: Otherwise it ranks up there with the best paulas I've owned barring the R8...just cannot hang with that.

Neck profile on mine is def R9/59 ish...C shaped... not more "d" shaped like a 57/58. I don't believe mine has a long neck tenon either. I haven't pulled the neck pup to check tho.

I think your 75Q is pretty, JeffB.

Anyway these days the LS85Q and under have a medium neck tenon.
Extends all the way to the neck pickup cavity.
Just doesn't have the tongue going into the bottom of the cavity like a long tenon. Still longer than a production Gibson short tenon.

I found this pic of a production Les Paul tenon. I don't know how accurate it is, but it's pretty sad.
