Differences between MXR Noise Clamp and Smart Gate?

Re: Differences between MXR Noise Clamp and Smart Gate?

ripped off another site:

1- Smartgate - you put this after your noisy pedals. The volume of your noisy pedal outputs have to cross a threshold for the Smartgate to open and let the sound through. This means that if your pedal noise changes (like turning boosts on and off) you'll need to set the threshold of the Smartgate pretty high to block the worst-case (highest) noise. This means small signals (all your boosts or distortions before the Smartgate are off) won't pass through the Smartgate and you won't hear those low volume signals (a bad thing).

2- Noise Clamp - you put your noisy pedals in the loop of this pedal. You use your raw guitar signal at the Noise Clamp trigger (threshold) input. This way you can have any combination of noisy effects on or off in the Noise Clamp loop but the volume of your playing level that triggers the Noise Clamp threshold to let the sound out to go to your amp is consistent. You'll be able to pass both quiet and loud notes from your guitar to your amp.

I don't use these pedals...just thought this might help...

Re: Differences between MXR Noise Clamp and Smart Gate?

Thanks for that, Brian. I have a Smart Gate, but I've wondered what the difference between the two was.

Yeah, I've been wondering what the difference was too. Thanks to dread for asking the question, prompting me to look up an answer!

Still, it would be nice to hear from someone who has tried the Noise Clamp, or both. I like the idea behind the Clamp, but again, I've never used a gate, clamp, whatever. The idea intrigues me, though.

I'm currently using the noise clamp, but have access to the smart gate and was thinking about trying it out. I love the clamp, it works perfect for me, but I'm quite a bit impulsive when it comes to gear lol...

Thanks for the help though.

Re: Differences between MXR Noise Clamp and Smart Gate?

I've reviewed both the Smart Gate and the Noise Clamp on my blog. I own a Noise Clamp and use it on stage too.

Both are excellent pedals. If you have problems with noisy dirt boxes and modulation pedals in front of your amp get a Noise Clamp. Put all your front of amp pedals in the Noise Clamp's loop and control the noise generated when using the offending pedals. I love it because there is a song or two where I'm using either a flanger or distortion pedal while on my dirty channel with lots of starts and stops. The Noise Clamp shuts out the flanging noise and hissing and humming of each pedal, without affecting my overall tone.

If you have problems with pedals in your effects loop making noise then get the Smart Gate and throw it at the end of the chain of effects in your loop. Again it does a great job of getting rid of noise without affecting your overall tone. That is, unless you are setting the Smart Gate insanely high.
