Digitech Bad Monkey or Arion Tubulator

Re: Digitech Bad Monkey or Arion Tubulator

Regarding the Bad Monkey:How does it sound pushing another distortion?Does it retain the rig's sound or just colors it with its own?
My amp has a crunch on channel 1 and gain on channel 2. The channel 2 gain sounds exactly the same as the BM, so run 2 with the gain all the way down as my "clean" channel and channel 1 with "crunch". I've run the BM with channel 1 and it sounded pretty good - but I felt I wasn't getting the boost I was looking for. I had the BM gain up pretty high, I think I was causing some interferance. Then I read this in this thread:
The Monkey will clean up pretty good, if you don't have the gain up past 12 o'clock.
So I turned my BM gain down to 12 o'clock and I've got a much better sound and the BM is giving me the boost I want. In the clean channel I get A LOT of boost - need to work on that.

But to answer your question, I don't feel like the BM is coloring the sound - just boosting the gain.

At best,I will be pushing the Silver Dragon with the BM/Tubulator into a clean SS amp, or use it standalone for SRV/Clapton/Hendrix type overdrive tones.

Hmm..seems like there isnt much to choose between them.

Re: Digitech Bad Monkey or Arion Tubulator

I vote tubulator. I haven't tried the bad monkey, but the tubulator is always a worthy purchase if you want a cheap TS type circuit that PWNES a real TS. Bad monkey seems like it would be alright, but I doubt it could be as good as the tubulator. The tubulator has a very rich sound and will fool most folks into thinking it's an actual tube pre. Others who know the TS inside and out thought the tubulator was a CMOS overdrive pedal because it was so smooth. The CMOS chip on the tubulator board is a flip flop chip for switching just like a TS has, but it doesn't suck tone like a TS at all. I rave about this pedal all the time because it's so frigging good. It's the supermodel wearing geeky girl glasses and frumpy clothes. Inside the frumpish exterior lies a smoky sexy framework that will curl your toes once you plug into it.

Ok then..The mighty Tubulator it is..what have I got to lose at $20..I can always buy the BM later if need be.
Great analogy BTW:laugh2:..geeky looking hot babes RULE!

Re: Digitech Bad Monkey or Arion Tubulator

I don't know what your finances are like, but if you've decided on the Tubulator, I would seriously get two of them. If you don't like the way they sound cascading into one another, you can run one dirtier and treblier, and the other smoother and creamier. The tone knob is very useful on these. But most of all, I would think that you'd have NO trouble selling the extra one for a profit if you didn't want it. Especially because it's difficult for you to get small things like this from the US, and you have a nice opportunity. Congrats I think you'll love the Tubulator.

Re: Digitech Bad Monkey or Arion Tubulator

Actually the first channel of my Silver Dragon gives me a nice semi-clean at the lower settings, so one tubulator would be enough driving it..and it can do the smooth lead boost thingie too..cant wait to try both together.
