Dimario Virtual PAF - thumbs up

Re: Dimario Virtual PAF - thumbs up

I've finally finshed all of the last clips, and posted the MP3's in a new location. Go here;

ftp://ftp.justinsamaha.com

Look in clips_public. Please download the clips if you plan to listen more than once.

Please excuse my lame guitar playing!!!! I was trying to bring out the qualities of the pickups, not really performing. I actually felt nervous while recording, since I knew that some serious guitar palyers might listen to the clips! :smack: Most were just me improvising, and I tried to play similar stuff for each pup. Some clips were recorded with pre-existing songs, to see how the pups fit into a mix.

Also keep in mind that most of these clips used the exact same amp settings (see below for details) That's not fair to the pickups. Also my guitar is not right for all of the pickups. Rather than judge the pickups as "good" or "bad", you should try to determine what you think the differences are, relative to each other. For example compared to the VPAF Hot, the Air Zone was too big and bassy for my guitar. But imagine that tone in a thinner-sounding guitar!

All of the previous clips, plus the new ones will be there. I was kinda consistent with the filenames, so you should be able ot figure out what everything is. Here's a guide:

Each file name begins with the name of the pup (VPAFH, CC, etc.). It will indicate neck or bridge position, if necessary. For example, I tried the VPAF Bridge in the neck and bridge positions. If no amp is named, or it says "test" or "test amp", then it was recorded through the original amp model for these tests. Since that amp kinda sucked for some pups, I started using a Vox and a Matchless model as well. Each one was tweaked slightly for the different pups, in order to highlight their subtle differences. If so, it will have "Vox", "Match", "Opti", or "OptiMatch" in the name. Match, Opti, and OptiMatch are all the same amp.

I still haven't made a final decision, but my favorite combos are CC bridge/VPAF Bridge neck and the APH-1 set. I really want a low-output version of the Custom Custom - I guess that's the Seth, maybe? Rich mid's, rolled off and tight bass, sweet sweet highs?

Oh, and that noise in most of the later clips? That's the result of many cold joints, overheating and frying most of the wires and pots, and my general hack-job of removing and installing pickups. Time to take it to a doctor.

I'm glad this was interesting and helpful to some folks - my apologies to those who found it useless or tedious!

Feel free to PM me with questions or comments about all this pickup insanity.

Rock on, everybody.

The low output version of the CC is an EVH!!! They both sound alot alike except, the EVH has less power!

Re: Dimario Virtual PAF - thumbs up

BTW, great clips!!! I am gassing for these pickups!

Re: Dimario Virtual PAF - thumbs up

There seems to be an increasing amount of folks raving about the Dimarzio VVPAF and VVPAFHot. These are by far the best sounding Dimarzios I have ever played!! I'm so impressed with this combo that my other Wolf is getting the same treatment. I'm sure the folks at Duncan have taken notice of this and will come up with a version carrying the Duncan name.

Thanks, theodie. GAS is the only constant in my life.

Also thanks for the EVH tip! I didn't think of that one, I guess since it's not one of the main production pups. I bet that would be perfect, from all the posts I've read about it here. [ADDED LATER: on second thought, I might be better off finding a cool hybrid on the Trading Post, or something from High Order...]

Walt: yeah, I think you're right about Duncan needing to come up with their own VPAF Hot-type pup. The more I use the Dimarzio VV PAF's, the more they sound like hybrid single coil-humbucker pups. They have the power and thickness (and hum-canceling) of 'buckers, but also the clear, 3-dimensional tone and feel of single-coils. What do you think? The "hybridness" of the VPAF's is really something new in the world of pickups, IMHO.

I think you've nailed it on the head. I wonder how the antiquities stand up to a side by side comparison?

Re: Dimario Virtual PAF - thumbs up

hey Wildstar great clips man!!
i liked the a2pro best for the neck, like a jazz with better EQ.
i thought the air zone was the ultimate pickup for hard rock ...WRONG
custom rocks hard but falls short for the lighter gain stuff.
is it just me or does it seem the bass champ of the lot?
guess i made the right combo choice after all,custom/a2pro for my Les paul.
wonder how they'll compare to a reAl gibson LP with 498 s.
thankyou again

Re: Dimario Virtual PAF - thumbs up

yeah...great clips Wildstar! I iked the VHPAF, CC and APII the best. The JB, Custom and Air Norton were my least favorites. Actually, the JB sounded like arse in you clips....but i know this pup sounds great in the room :beerchug:

Yeah I think that the correct term is tranparency of the pickup is what's being noticed, which was a big part of Eddie's sound. I would rave about Duncans if they made one, but I'm not in the position to have the custom shop wind one for me at the tune of $140 per. I also believe that this is a big gap in the duncan line that should be looked at, Dimarzio filled this gap in their line quite nicely.

if you guys can use a trem pup
the blues saraceno is amazing and it is at 9.7K
it is often over looked for two reasons
it looks unusal and it is a trem spaced pup
but if you have a newer gibby or a wider tunamatic it lines up perfect
this pup is really cool and is very PAF:beerchug:

Re: Dimario Virtual PAF - thumbs up

Duncan has experimented before with "split" magnets, and by that I mean pickups with magnets that are half A2, and half A5. A forum member here even tried the surgery on his own, somehow fusing two halves together.

My suggestion would be to make a pickup wound to almost 10k, but with a split magnet consisting of A4 and A2, which narrows the "tone gap" between those two types.

People argued that the top 3 strings sounded to different compared to the bottom three strings, but I can't think of many artists who play all 6 strings, or even 5 strings, at once when fretting chords.

At least not rock guitarists.......

The Airbucker "technology" is not just DiMarzio's way of getting around buying A2 magnets, it's their way of keeping the low strings tight while the high strings become less shrill.

If you took a Steve's Special, put an A5 magnet in it, and "airbuckered" only the top 3 strings, you'd have a pickup that on paper would SMOKE the C5 in terms of "modern-pseudo-vintage" tone.

You can basically customize your own "warmth" factor by using this philosophy.
