Hmmm...this pickup might just be the ticket for me. Anyone know if it's as bright as the VPAF?

slightly lower resonant peak
but you can always turn up the treb/presence on the amp or dont use a tone control on the guitar

They're fairly different from the Pearly Gates. They're warmer and more transparent -- probably closer to a Seth, but maybe a bit smoother.



That makes sense. I could never understand why they would claim that A2 magnets are unreliable, or that degaussed magnets are unreliable. I've never heard of one suddenly stop working. And how can they make the claim that degaussed A5 is equivalent to A2?

When I tried degaussing an A5 for the first time, I tried to make it sound like A2. The EQ flattens, the mids come out, and there are some nice harmonics, but they will never sound the same. I think it's the range of frequencies that each responds to, along with the attack, that keeps them sounding different no matter the gauss level.

True, I meant to write that their degaussed or "aired" pickups won't sound like an A2 no matter what. And they have claimed that A2 and degaussed A5 are unstable before. Now I guess they're trying to pull silly technological rationalizations for not using A2.

I think that Larry Dimarzio should tell Slash that he has it wrong, and that his pickups are unstable and that their performance is poor and muddy. Or maybe Billy Gibbons, Warren Haynes, Dave Gilmour, or Eddie Van Halen? Or any one of the many rock guitarists who have used the Gibson '57 Classics or BurstBucker 1&2's...

It's like some audio engineer coming in and complaining that tube amps aren't linear enough.

I actually find the VPAF a little too bright. The 36th anniversay seems to be less so?

yes i agree anico II has its own tone and feel
i agree that dimazio limits themselves in not using any II's in any of thier buckers
I think it is kind of strange they are the ONLY maker who does not?
many have tried II's in dimarzio's (including myself) with exellent results
the V hot paf for example sounds great with a II in it and un-airbuckered
it is a bit more creamy and has a touch more output

The 36th Ann. pickups sound fantastic! I like the sound clips a lot, great job! The VHPAF is a great pickup too. I never thought it was too harsh or bright at all but I only played it in a Les Paul. Thought about trying it in a PRS though.

yes smoother/rounder overall
everyone that owns them is saying some really great things about these new paf's
dimarzio seems to have a real winner with the vintage les paul crowd which is a feat in itself! LOL!

I don't know. Haven't tried one yet. I was commenting on the sound sample someone posted previously. The VPAF is a little bright but I think it's for more narrow applications. What kind of music do you use it for? I wouldn't consider it an all purpose pickup. Some of the techincal information posted here seems to indicate that it has a smoother top end.

I've got one w/ A2 in the bridge of my epiphone/strat mutant hybrid, but I don't have a nut for the guitar, so I haven't been able to hear it yet. If it's anything like the VHPAF (with A2) though, It'll rock tits.

Kudos to DiMarzio for finally cracking the unreliable alnico magnet conundrum. With my aged magnets, I can’t tell you how many times the notes jump off the strings so slowly I have to wait and go out and grab a bite and come back before they reach my ears. And of course the notes don’t stay true as they sustain. And don’t get me started on how alnico 2 and “aged” alnico 5 give me no sense of touch or control. Thanks to DiMarzio I have an unequalled ability create my own sound.

Okay, but every invention makes people doubt. But if Shakespeare tells us he only used ink and feather to right classic drama, you should not believe he would do it even better and quicker when he would have had a computer.

I don't think I follow... Are you saying that the creator is more important than the creative tools? For example, I would believe that shakespeare would have produced his work more quickly with a computer, but the quality would remain unchanged, because the computer doesn't manifest itself in the mind of the writer, or so I thought... And how does every invention make people doubt? Are you talking about social inertia? If so I get it, but when they detonated fat man and little boy, doubt was probably the only emotion I didn't feel. Sorry to be a negative nancy, I just don't follow your argument.

edit: I mean the video of them detonating the bomb, I'm not old enough to have been alive when that happened.

yeah i agree that to say that using a II in a pup would be a bad thing is ridiculous
there are many fine pups that use II's,III,s
i never had a "unreliable" alnico II pup and a certainly dont remember ever having any sustain problems or anything
the ONLY thing a II has is a slighty looser feel in the low end
but it still has plenty of punch and sustain?

Howdy,

While the 36th PAF is "middy" it compliments the Air Classic in the neck of my ES-335. The 36th PAF reminds me of the Duncan vintage soapbar bridge in my Les Paul Special..and that's a good thing!
