Dimarzio Cruiser neck?

Anyone tried those? I´ve heard them at Dimarzio´s website and they sound like what I maybe want in my Fender HM Strat Ultra. Not sure, though.

Edit: Now it has come to my knowledge that at least one of the clips at Dimarzio´s website is played by Andy Timmons who use the bridge version of Cruiser in both neck and middle. The neck version is said to be only 3.13k and the bridge 5.75k. The bridge version therefore seems to be close to a ordinary single coil, but the neck version seems to be somewhat weak? Anyone who knows if the DC resistance is measured in humbucking- or single-coil mode? If it´s measured in humbucking mode it seems as the neck-version have almost no winding at all? :)

Re: Dimarzio Cruiser neck?

I had one in the neck of a rosewood body tele with a floyd and all maple neck. It was so muddy and bassy it had to go. Even with the low E side of the pup screwed down as far as possible. I replaced it with a SSL-1.
Now I'm happy.

Re: Dimarzio Cruiser neck?

Its weak DC wise but it has a ceramic magnet so it prolly puts out like a Vinatge hot style single coil.

Re: Dimarzio Cruiser neck?

Yes, you´re right. I now got an answer from Dimarzio and they say it´s not a vintage single-coil pickup, so comparing DC-resistance is not a good guidance. And the low DC comes from measuring the pickup in humbucking mode, but it´s still somewhat louder than an ordinary single-coil pickup.

Here´s a soundclip with the Italian guitarist Marco Sfogli who plays his Rash signature model, which has 2 Cruiser neck (3.13K) in neck and middle and a D-sonic (11.96K) in bridge. You can see he´s switching between bridge and neck all the time in the clip, and they seem to balance quite well in volume.

Re: Dimarzio Cruiser neck?

My advice is to get the Bridge model and use it in the neck.. that's what Andy Timmons does and I followed him.. very happy :friday:

Gotta use 500k pots though

Re: Dimarzio Cruiser neck?

I'd also recommend the fast track 1 in the neck.

Vinnie Moore uses them and he geats a great tone.

Check 'em out on you tube

Re: Dimarzio Cruiser neck?

That´s a nice guitar! I want the neck pickup to sound Strat-like but being somewhat humbucker-like, i.e. more modern, with more bass, sustain and punch than an ordinary one. So probably the bridge version will fit in the neck. I will have a more classic Strat-sounding pickup in the middle, and have already a Breed in the bridge, so with this combo it will probably be very versatile - but a lot of tweaking on the TBX volume control the guitar had from factory.

Re: Dimarzio Cruiser neck?

Based on that I'd get a fast track 1. that's exactly the set up I now have.
That's what's in the pic above....
AT1 in the bridge, Cruiser bridge in the middle and Fast Track 1 in the neck.

Re: Dimarzio Cruiser neck?

The Cruiser is pretty Stratty from what Ive heard based on Andy Timmons' material.

Re: Dimarzio Cruiser neck?

You inspire me to post another clip with Marco Sfogli, where he plays with a Cruiser Neck in neck (not a Cruiser Bridge in neck like Andy Timmons) and a D-Sonic in bridge. It can be clearly heard when he switch between them in this clip. Sounds wonderful:

Vinnie Moore , go to 2.24 and enjoy :friday:

I saw UFO recently and Vinnie was the best live guitarist I've ever seen, so much control and tone.
I'd never heard of him till I saw him, was really really impressed.

Re: Dimarzio Cruiser neck?

Did anyone mention 24 frets? You need the bridge model or the Fast Track 1. The Cruiser neck model will be a little thin in the 24 fret position. Fast Track in the neck and Cruiser bridge in the middle is great, or Cruiser Bridge in the neck and Cruiser neck in the middle would be great too.

Re: Dimarzio Cruiser neck?

I say it very much depends on what sound we´re after. I want the sound which comes in 0.28 in the clip below. Played by Marco Sfogli on a 24 fret Rash Monster Pro with a Cruiser Neck in the neck. But, yes, he always has a lot of dist and perhaps I want a clean sound with more depth, so a Cruiser Bridge will be better for me - but screwed down a bit. Listen at 0.28:

Edit: Now I counted the frets in this clip and that Rash Monster Pro has only 22 frets, even if the model is said to have 24 frets at Rash website:

Re: Dimarzio Cruiser neck?

Could just get two fast tracks. Its a lot like the Cruiser but with more output and fullness.

I think the tone you are chasing you will definitely get it with the Cruiser and most likely will get it with the fast track. If I were to choose between Cruiser Bridge and Fast Track 1 I would get a FS-1 because I dont like think single coils hence why I like the Virtual Vintage line.
