Dimarzio equivalent of the '59?

O.K. I ordered a Seymour 59 bridge humbucker to make a "fat strat" (singles in the middle and neck). I've been waiting for 3 weeks and it still hasn't arrived. My guitar shop has Dimarzio PAF and PAF Pro in stock. Which one would make a better match with my American Strat Single Coils? I'm looking for somewhat equal output on each pickup, using the neck single for clean tube sound and the bridge humbucker with a Boss overdrive. Thanks.

Re: Dimarzio equivalent of the '59?

I would say hang in there and wait cause I think you`ll really like the 59 in your Strat. If you can`t wait go for the Dimarzio it can`t hurt , one Dimarzio I really like that has a vintage vibe is the Virtual PAF humbucker .

Re: Dimarzio equivalent of the '59?

The PAF would be the closest. I'd wait for the 59 though.

Re: Dimarzio equivalent of the '59?

C'mon guyz. I got this beautiful Am. Strat from a friend, took it to the shop an hour later (hated single coil bridge pu) and haven't seen it since. Is the SD 59 really a better pickup than the DiMarzio PAF (or PAF pro), or am I simply asking at the wrong place (duh, it's the SD forum)? I'm willing to wait it out if everyone tells me so, but I can't imagine that a DiMarzio humbucker would be a big mistake.

Re: Dimarzio equivalent of the '59?

If you jump the gun and get the Dimarzio there will always be that small voice in the back of your head whispering, "I wonder what the '59 would sound like in this guitar...."

Re: Dimarzio equivalent of the '59?

I feel your pain...

I'm putting a Jazz neck and '59 Trembucker in my Strat. I had the Jazz, and the music store owner said that he'd order the '59 for me. He called SD, and it was in stock. But, it took 2 1/2 weeks until it arrived! I'm still waiting for them to finish it (and getting mighty impatient, too).

Re: Dimarzio equivalent of the '59?

Every time I ordered a pickup and dropped the guitar off to have it installed, I waited until the pickup was delivered to the store. That way I didn't miss out on playing that guitar for too long.

Re: Dimarzio equivalent of the '59?

I've played both. The DiMarzio didn't suck but the '59 was better IMO

Who did you buy from?

Bought it from Mike's Music in PA. He's a great guy and a great store for prices. Tells me he's the 3rd largest seller of SD in the states. He really has a ton of SD. Just not the 59 in white trembucker. Is that so uncommon? Anyhow, I think I'll honor your opinions and wait "one more week".

Re: Dimarzio equivalent of the '59?

I rarely buy SD pickups from a store anymore and then only if they are in stock. I just ordered a Tele Ht Stack bridge and a Tele Vintage Stack neck from John at Black Rose customs and they arrived at my customers house in three days and for cheaper than at any store front shop in the area.

GC is notoriously slow (4-8 weeks) and many mom-n-pops take their time ordering new stock until they have a "minimum" order because it improves their margins. John or Lew are a better way to go.

Re: Dimarzio equivalent of the '59?

I'd cancel the guitar shop order for the '59 and order one from Black Rose Customs or Lew's Guitars. Black Rose have got pickups to me in ten days and I'm the other side of the Atlantic!

I don't know what the DiMarzio equivalents are like but the SD '59 is a great pickup.

Re: Dimarzio equivalent of the '59?

Lew didn't have one in stock and Black Rose didn't respond to my email. I tried another place online and no one has a white '59 trembucker in stock. BTW, my local dealer is a small shop, but I know for a fact he tried to order it last week. SD simply does not have one on the shelf, I guess. So, I guess it's either a Black and White SD '59 or a white DiMarzio PAF.

Re: Dimarzio equivalent of the '59?

I used a DiMarzio PAF Pro. That's a very nice pup with a good sound to it. I later replaced it with a SD 59. Needless to say, although both are "similar" in style, the SD 59 demolishes it. The PAF Pro may be a good pickup, some may even say a great one, but IMHO, the 59 is the one of the BEST pups ever made. Wait for the best, forget the rest.

Re: Dimarzio equivalent of the '59?

To late now, but the PAF Pro was not the way to go, the PAF would have been a better choice, and the Virtual PAF would have been even better ... The PAF Pro is not Pafish, nor is it really meant to be. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Re: Dimarzio equivalent of the '59?

Hey Pookie; Once you get the 59 in, ;) see if Mike will let you try it out in that nice little Peavey Classic 20 he has in the back.

Then give us, (me), a mini-review. ;)

Thanks; Artie

Re: Dimarzio equivalent of the '59?

YES, I called Mike's and my white SD '59 will be in this week. My strat will be ready this saturday! I hope it was worth the wait. What's so special about that classic 20 amp at Mike's? Sure, I can check it out.

Re: Dimarzio equivalent of the '59?

i havent tried it myself, but the dimarzio PAF sounds incredible in an american strat.. add a floyd to that and you have the same guitar that adrian smith is playing.

Re: Dimarzio equivalent of the '59?

I don't know what the Dimarzio equivalent of the '59 is but I'm not a fan of the '59 in the neck at all....it's too boomy and lacks definition IMO.....would be better if it had less bass. If was going to try a PAF style pickup in the neck again(loving my Humbucker From Hell at the moment) I would go Dimarzio PAF, Virtual PAF, or PAF Joe.
