DiMarzio ERG pickups for metal

I know we don’t have a lot of 7 and 8 string players here, but I’ll throw this out anyway...

My Ibanez TAM10 8 string came stock with the DiMarzio Ionizer set. If you’re doing any sort of heavy and going for a modern tone, this is a killer set. It’s no surprise Tosin Abasi helped design them. The neck is very clear, and the bridge extremely mid-focused. The single coil is surprisingly nice, and I could see using it for the lead tone. All three pickups sound excellent split, with the bridge and neck being very Stratty.

I scored a great deal on a handful of 7 string pickups, and am trying out the DiMarzio Imperium in the bridge and PAF7 in the neck. The PAF7 is awesome for heavy stuff, with that cool kind of tubular pick attack. Single notes with high gain are really cool. I have a second PAF7, and like the neck so much I want to hear it in the bridge, but that would mean removing the Imperium, which I will not be doing anytime soon. This may be THE pickup I’ve been after since the first swap. It’s aggressive, but sounds great clean, super tight, but not thin. Dave Davidson of Revocation designed this one, and its a bad mofo, delivers what it promises. The Imperium neck is on my list now, along with another 7 so the PAFs have a home.

Re: DiMarzio ERG pickups for metal

I have a 7 string that I’ve been playing more and more recently.
It’s got the Nazgul/Sentient set.
The bummer for me is that I need the active mount style pickups so my choices are limited.
Ever since I got this guitar something sounded “off” about it. Like it was wired in coil split or something.
So two weekends ago I went and rewired it. I honestly don’t know what I did different but it has turned into a fire breather.
The Nazgul has, to my ear anyway, plenty of mids. I was expecting a scooped metal pickup, which it is (except not very scooped). But it can do much more than just straight up metal.

There are a bunch of those on my Reverb watch list, and I'll try a set at some point in the future.

If you ever get DiMarzio curious, I cannot stress enough how awesome the Imperium is. Just spent another 20 minutes or so riffing on it, and it's just nuts. The Ionizer sounds great with the same settings, too.
