Dimarzio experiment

I just pulled the Alnico 5 magnet out of an old Schaller pickup I have lying around and put it in my Dimarzio Steve Special (ceramic magnets are in this guitar from the plant)

Sounds really nice with the A5 magnet. I put it in my stratocaster

I've heard from a few places that a Steves Special with an A5 magnet is basically a Megadrive, although I don't know if the Megadrive magnet is the same size/strength as the one you put in there. Although I'd imagine they sound similar.

I thought the MegaDrive had waaaay less output than the Steve's Special.

I had it in my head that the MegaDrive (without checking) was a 13k or less p'up, making it lower-output than the Custom line of p'ups.

Steve's Special is around 16k or more, as I recall.

I have an Alnico II mag from a Duncan kicking around. Maybe I'll give that a shot.

Should give a VERY flat response. I'm not sure how I'll like that but what the heck right?

I put in the Alnico II (it actually fit) and all I can say is wow.

This pickup is now as it should be. Hot enough to drive a lower gain amp (I have a Harry Joyce.....very Hiwatt sounding) into heaven. The Alnico II magnet takes out the scoop from the tone curve and adds some much needed mid while taming the highs and shaving off some of the (overpowering) lows.

I'm going to pot this and keep this one right where it is.

Cool man, glad it worked out well!

I love goofing around with different magnets. Its pretty amazing how much difference in tone/output they make.

The Megadrive is 350 mV and the Steves Special is 390 mV so they're pretty close.

A mega drive is about 15.4 ohms.
