The Super D is not exactly the greatest clean sounding pup, although it has good cleans they are their own thing, it's not the tone that a lot of people first think of when they think clean. The super D has a classic sound to it, paired with a brighter neck pup you can get some really good results ... it does a better job dirty in the bridge than clean for most things. A SD '59 neck and and DMZ Super D in the bridge is a pretty good combo matched with any PAF type of clone (DMZ Paf, Paf classic necks, Virtual Paf neck, for brighter PAF Pro), in the SD line A Jazz for a brighter sound,a Pearly Gates neck for more bite and a bit more snarl, the Alnico II Pro for a warmer and smoother top ... any of those pair in the neck with it will be good. Also as long as we are talking DMZ the Super D in the bridge, with a Super II in the neck is still a great combo, think of the Super II as a Super D tuned for the neck position (well it works well there), the same overall output, but less bass, and much brighter indeed. The Super D is still a great pup, if you are considering it, think about something for the neck from those listed as aside from the Super II they don't stray to far from the paf thing (well the paf pro stretches that), and a Super D works well with something a bit paf-ey in the neck.
