Dimarzio Pups..which one...?

Re: Dimarzio Pups..which one...?

Huuuum, I take it you have decided on the bridge Dimarzio and are interested mainly in what to do for the neck position? They have both neck and bridge versions of the Breed calibrated for each other. The Breed neck would probably balance with any high output bridge model. I can't offer an honost comparison of the Breed neck to the Air Norton though. The neck model Breed and the Air Norton neck will both probably require a high output pup in the bridge for a good balance.

Good luck

Re: Dimarzio Pups..which one...?

the super distortion i doubt will be harsh. super 3 is a modified super distortion, with less bass, more mids, and more output. the super distortion i hear is not really a metal pickup. besides, i think if you liked the duncan cc, you'll like the super 3, they're all mids

Re: Dimarzio Pups..which one...?

from own experience:

Super distortion bridge
Fred Neck

that´s sort of a mud avoiding setup…

i'd say that the dimarzio super 3 is a good choice for a bridge. its quite similar to the breed, but has quite a bit more output. i have it in a super shrill guitar like you, although mine is is maple body/neck. it warmed it up to the point i need to boost treble! also, its pretty tight, well, compared to my bro's tone zone in a mahogany rg it is. the tone zone has way too much bass to be used for your unholy brutal riffs.

rock on!

The Super DIstortion or SUper 3 is what I would have suggested as well but he said low output....those are high output.

There's not too many cases where you get tight pickups with low output pickups IMO. To me, tight = ceramic alot of times.

Every pickup is going to be a compromise of some sort.

Re: Dimarzio Pups..which one...?

since this is a dimarzio thread i might as well ask. how you guys would describe the guitar tone of a d sonic mated with a basswood RG?

Re: Dimarzio Pups..which one...?

I am not sure about the Super 3

A lot of people like the X2N for speed metal and thrash. I would agree. The Breed has a classic tone lying beneath it's high output, the Air Zone is Sweet and can play bad ass metal at the same time. I think the TZ is great, I do't find it too loose. A good amp with tight bass will sound just fine. If you want it wayyyyyyyy tight, then go EMG. I find Dimarzios really good under high gain. I tend to prefer their newer models - Air Zone, VPAFs, VV's etc.

I can tell you this about the DMZ samples. I always thought wow they don't have enough samples - still do. I always thought their samples are too processed etc - then I realzied something... DMZ has the most accurate descriptions and analysis of their pickups. I usually plug and think damn that's what they said it sounded like (ie Phil collen or Yngqie). As far as the samples - I must say that a lot of them are major players in action with them, and from my own experience I have found the tone to be right on the money, processed or not, that's true to form.

I have trouble with the samples on WCR or Rio's sites. They don't make me feel like I am hearing the true sound. I think they pick good samples. No one has perfect samples. I like SD's samples concept, but the problem is I have bought a couple of SD models feeling like I didn't get a good enough chance to hear what the pickuo does best, and therefore bought the wrong model.

This is hard to put in words, but in a nutshell, I actually somewhat prefer to hear a pickup in action with an artist who is showing what it is meant to do.

I'm sure the Duncan custom shop could sort you out with a 'With Full Distortion' bridge and a '****in' hails rails' neck.

ME TOO
i´ll get that COMBO LATER. FOR SURE.
i didn´t forget it.

Re: Dimarzio Pups..which one...?

If I was to get another DiMarzio or a set I'd be getting the Tone Zone and Air Norton, sending them to fellow member WICKED LESTER to have them modded to sound like the DiMarzio's that came/come stock in the EBMM EVH/Axis. :D Possibly a Virtual PAF and/or a Virtual Hot PAF from all the raves about them.

WFD, if you're looking for medium output and looking at DiMarzio, look no further than the SuperD.

Regards to Pedalin Bob's comment:

*** "As stated above, the Tonezone is not tight, and I found it to be far too boomy and muddy for my taste.

For a medium output pickup, I really like the PAF Pro in both bridge and neck position. It has a very nice warm-ish open sound, but still with a bit of tightness--it doesn't sound muddy." **

Short answer is Olin's - the thing needs high gain...or work the tone ctrls on the amp....

So, last night I put the TZ in my SG..a dark guitar, very resonant, lots of bass, rosewood F/B. Sure enough, through the fender I got a HUGE sound, lots of bass, but even in the openback 2x10, not loose. Good, solid, concrete-cracking bass. Highs were a little dull, so I think,hm let's play with the amp.

The Fender tone stack gets VERY bright...cranking treble to 8, and the TZ comes alive. Still got the bass but it is tighter, and the highs are smooth, nice, no harsh ice. Cool! A very different sound than a low output PAF bucker - more mids - flatter than the JB, not spikey. I liked it.

Through the higain amp (a single-ended design with a marshall-style preamp) and I was giggling. Need more hair (on my head, not the pickup!). I was doing tapping - mind you I never do this but it was silly stupid easy to do legato & tapping with the TZ and a ton of gain, this thing shines! Hammers & pulls get so much more beef, now I know why Vai likes his evos - high power is a good thing sometimes :)

WIth a treblier pickup you get a little hash under all that gain unless you are really careful about muting...with the TZ you can tap all day long and you get big fat clear notes. Lovinit....btw got it mated with a PafPro in the neck, a good match tonally & output wise. You can crank the treble on the amp and both will stay smooth.

JB is on the shelf!

Re: Dimarzio Pups..which one...?

The key to, IME and IMO getting great sounds of the SuperD is using it in the application it was designed for:

Overdriving a low to moderate gain amp (by todays standards).

It wasn't designed for all out brewtal droptuned metal with an uberschall or rectumfrier. It was designed to goose Fender combos, HiWatts, and Marshall NMVs in the early 1970s

When you oversaturate them with modern high gain they will retain note clarity, and remain pretty tight on the low end, but they get buzzy on the high end, thin out, and get super compressed, and frankly IMO sound like @$$.

Keep the gain at around the 2203 category, and goose with a pedal for leads as needed and they are tough to beat..lotta meat..fat low mids and tight bass, crunchy, and they have a good presence to them (without being trebley) that allows them to cut through for leads.

At the time it was aptly named..nowadays I'd say it's in the range of a medium ouput pup tonally. Custom/CC levels. It's not an EMG or Dimebucker, or Duncan Distortion by any means.

Re: Dimarzio Pups..which one...?

Thank´s JEFFB
so, what tha **** do you recomend me for the bridge, to pair with teh Air Norton? i´m pretty sure i´ll get the Air Norton For the Neck, but for the bridge, i´m in a doubt between the tonezone, or the breed. or another one
i just don´t want a bRIGHT sound .. cause my guitar is already SUPEOR bright AND HARSH.
with excellent harmonics ALL over the NECK.
Hails
J.P
i was thinking the EVO 2 , but don´t know if it will be bright .

Re: Dimarzio Pups..which one...?

i don´t want to go Seymoru Duncan on this guitar
i´m already a seymour duncan user with my FENDER.
hahahahaahah C5 bridge, Jazz Neck.

Re: Dimarzio Pups..which one...?

Since the guitar is bright already, go with the Tone Zone. Can't go wrong IME. Paul Gilbert used, and maybe still uses, the Tone Zone. He gets some great tones out of his Ibanez axes with it on the Mr. Big albums, especially Lean In To It. I know you play heavier than that but I'm pretty sure it'll handle it.

Mud doesn't come from the pickup totally. Don't forget the amp, your EQ settings, speakers, open or closed back cab, and of course the guitar wood itself. With yours being bright and playing through a 5150, I doubt you run in to any mud issues.
