DiMarzio Super 3 Opinions?

Re: DiMarzio Super 3 Opinions?

Super thick in the mids, slightly dark, compressed highs. Good for thin/bright trem guitars. Not terribly dynamic.

Listen to any Phil Collen (Def Leppard) in the last 15 years or so.

Re: DiMarzio Super 3 Opinions?

Whatcha going for? what does the guitar lack?

It doesn't really lack anything. I replaced the stock pickups with an AZ/AN combo that was nice; however, the two singles sounded bad with the 500k pots I installed for the buckers; too bright...

DiMarzio says the Morse bridge pickup and the Super 3 are close in output; but the Super 3 is a little darker and chunkier. Since my amps run a little bright anyway, I thought the Super 3 would be a nice add and I wouldn't have to replace the 250k pots.

Re: DiMarzio Super 3 Opinions?

I tried one once--I wasnt a huge fan.. Think...mids! Thats it! Its a little harsh and I wasnt really able to pull harmonics out of it like I wanted. I really didnt see the chunk either with the dipped top end and the spiked mids. I traded it with their 30 day policy for a Norton and ended up keeping it. I had it in my SG for a while and I dont think im really much of a fan of the rolled off top end either. I went back to duncans--Im installing a DD tonight that I got from SD through their exchange policy (originally a Custom Custom). We'll see how that one works--good I hope!!

Re: DiMarzio Super 3 Opinions?

I have one. Same experience as Jeff. It splits very well, but I like the Super Distortion better.

Re: DiMarzio Super 3 Opinions?

OK, so you want to continue to use 250K pots so your singles will be nice.

So therefore you'd need some bright/clear humbucker pups that wouldn't be too dark sounding with 250K pots?

If so, best bet is

Norton *NOT AIR* bridge
Virtual PAF neck.

May not have the output you want though. IDK enuff about all the Vai pups..breeds and evos and whatnot, to make a suggestion there.

Re: DiMarzio Super 3 Opinions?

Interesting Jeff, The EBMM Steve Morse guitar is poplar and the buckers have ceramic magnets and the pots are all 250k. The pickups came first. The guitar was designed around Steve's specs as well as the need to work with his sig pickups. I know a guy who replaced the singles with Area 51/61 models. It seems that if you mess with any part of the whole design, the results of whatever change are not positive. The guy who installed the singles seems to really like them though....

I'm totally unfam with the SM models, but it seems with the multitude of switching options and Mr. Morse's obvious "anal-ness" about his rig/tone/setup, you very well may be right: the whole is greater than sum of the parts.

Re: DiMarzio Super 3 Opinions?

Butch, if you want to try the Super 3, PM me your adress and I'll ship it out to you so you can try it and then decide if you want to buy one for your guitar or not.

I believe you're right Jeff...

Wouldn't a "bright HB used with 250k pots with high output" be a JB? Not a Dimarzio but could be the answer.

Wow! What a nice guy! The world needs more out there like you!

Re: DiMarzio Super 3 Opinions?

Nah, not nice at all, just paying it forward, bro. :burnout:

Thats the way to do it-things always come back to you like a boom-a-rang, your just planting seed fo ya in the future! Right on man!

Re: DiMarzio Super 3 Opinions?

Dimarzio Virtual PAF and Virtual Hot PAF sound like they were made for 250k pots, i have a VHPAF in my Ibanez RT450 and it sounded too bright with the 500k pots so i put in some 250k and...WOW the perfect tone for this guitar
