DiMarzio Super Distortion and Super 3...what's the difference?

Re: DiMarzio Super Distortion and Super 3...what's the difference?

Very similar pickups. They are about the same in output with the difference being the Super3 has the more of it's output in the mids and the Super Distortion has more of its' output on the lower bass end.

To me the Super 3 seems bassier than the Super Distortion but that may be cause the Super 3 has less highs... The Super 3 is my favorite Dimarzio.

Go to the Dimarzio site - they have descriptions on these pickups. The Superdistortion is a bit outdated. I've seen the Super3 used as original equipment in many Floyd Equipped guitars, like the Jackson Phil Collen, Fender HM Strat, among others. Perhaps it takes the supposed shrillness out of a floyd and adds bass?

they do have descriptions on the site, but not of the Super 3...only of pickups they currently make (without needing to custom order something)

Dimarzio makes many pickups still taht aren't on their site currently. All you have to do is ask your dealer..Dimarzio ships weekly as far as I know.

not that i'm looking for the pickup, it's one i have already, and was just curious about the difference in case i wanted to sell it.

The Super 3 is a tiny bit hotter, and it's wound with VERY fine wire - the DCR is on the order of 22K.

It's got very little high end and a ton of mids and bass. I used to love it (the regular Super is still one of my favorites), but compared to something like a Tone Zone or a FRED it's not got much going on in the harmonics department.

I sort of disagree....the ToneZone has even more bass and mids and less top end than the Super3....and I have no problem getting good harmonics out of the Super3.

I find the ToneZone to be relatively hot but mushy and loose in *most* but not all guitars....the Super3 is in teh same veign but is tighter, slightly hotter, and more aggressive IMO.

The Fred on the other hand I have yet to try but I've heard great things about it.
