Dimarzio Super Distortions

Have you used one? Then I'm interested in your opinion.

I might have a good price on one. It's like twenty years old but it's fully functional, apparently. I don't really have a specific guitar in mind for it. Probably my Westone. Maybe my SG once I get it back together. Maybe just keep it around until I get something new.

Anyone have good things to say about it?

Re: Dimarzio Super Distortions

This is a good start. I like this. Good vibes in here. :friday:

Re: Dimarzio Super Distortions

Dexter Holland from The Offspring uses Super-D's. I've always liked that bands rhythm tones. So naturally I want one in my Ibanez.

They have a solid reputation, and you can get one at a decent price. I'd go for it.

Didn't know that. The Offspring were one of the first rock bands I really liked and they're pretty much responsible for sending me down the musical path I'm on. I always really dug their rhythm tones too.

Vibes is gettin' betterer and betterer in here.

Re: Dimarzio Super Distortions

They're a good, solid rock and metal pickup with lots of mids and not as harsh as you'd think for being ceramic. There's a reason they're classics!

Re: Dimarzio Super Distortions

It is a classic pickup. It is fat, round, crunchy and smooth. The only downside is that it doesn't have the best punch or definition. It sounds good in nearly everything you put it in.

Re: Dimarzio Super Distortions

My favorite pickup. Done.

Probably mine as well. Only pickup I've had in more than one guitar simultaneously. Ever.

I just love the crunch. Nothing else has as much crunch as the Super D.

Re: Dimarzio Super Distortions

Classic for a reason, in the same category as the JB and PAF Pro. If you haven't ever tried one, you must, if only so you have a point of comparison.

Someone on the forum here once said, "Sometimes you just want a Super Distortion, and nothing else will do." Very, very true.

Re: Dimarzio Super Distortions

Was Steve about to offer up some internet lore and unfounded third party knowledge and opinion?

:p

Because, ya know, I'm actually cool with that stuff. I've never even used a Dimarzio before, never mind this particular one. Consider me a blank slate on this topic.

Re: Dimarzio Super Distortions

Currently my favorite bridge pickup.

I have used them in:

Les Paul
Flying V
Tele
Strat

Love them. Just hot enought to rock, but still traditional sounding. Does classic rock to metal. Thick with big bass, lots of lower mids, and smooth singing highs but not muddy. Very repsonsive to pick attack and will compress more when you dig in harder, less when playing softer. Not your typical ceramic humbucker. There's a reason its been such a rock staple for so many years.

Re: Dimarzio Super Distortions

I hate to say it, but I love it.

At 13k it's hot but not molten.

It's got great bass and mids - the classic DiMarzio sound. The highs are not strident. They are surprisingly present as well.

It IS the sound of 70's classic rock. KISS ALIVE, REO Speedwagon, you can go on. But it is also the sound of 80's Metal - Iron Maiden, etc...And then there is Al DiMeola...

It is super flexible. It isn't too compressed (it is compressed), it isn't too hot, it isn't too harsh, it cleans up, it's got an openess about it.

And...when mixed in the right amount with a PAF gives me my best acoustic sim!

Works in strats and LP's. Two rows of hex screws really let you tailor the tone. It is a classic and it never gets old.

As much as my ear is tuned to Duncan, can't hate. Nothing but love. I may be a touch biased for obvious avatar related reasons.

ps - available in double cream!

Re: Dimarzio Super Distortions

Had them in a Les Paul twentysome years ago, in both neck and bridge.
From what I remember they sounded good, but I played mostly with pretty high gain at the time.
No harm done in trying it. If you don't like it, it's easy to sell again.

Re: Dimarzio Super Distortions

I love them, have them in a couple of guitars. They're not my favourite pickup, but certainly one of them and can't be beat if you are getting one cheap.

Re: Dimarzio Super Distortions

Got one in my Stratocaster. Probably the best I've used for that guitar. Bass is tight enough for metal riffing, chords get a nice growl when overdriven, lead sound is great.
Looking at what artist use this pu, it's one pickup that does it all.
