Duncan distortion= D activator
Invader= tonezone
custom= super distortion
norton or EVO= jb
Full shred= X2n

Invader =/= The Tone Zone

Full Shred =/= X2N

I can't speak for the rest.

TBH just about every pickup from both companies are completely different from each other... It's too hard to compare.

I would expect to see this kind of IMMATURITY at maybe harmony central but am dissapointed to see it here!:butkick:

The Dimarzio Super Distortion kind of sounds like the Seymour Duncan Custom in my opinion.

makes sense to me because both use a ceramic mag and have AWG43 wire and are wound to approx 13-14K

There are no Dimarzios that sound even remotley like Duncans.
Even the pickups that are supposed to be similar (PAFs etc) sound worlds apart.

I like both and use both for different things, but trying to find comparable pickups is completely pointless simply because they don't compare.

I have owned plenty of both and there is very little comparison between models. The only two that sound similar is the Fastrack II and JB.

I bought a messed up Super Distortion last week. I replaced the leads and the baseplate. I put on a nickle steel baseplate. The low mids have a bit less presence, but they are clearer. The midrange has shifted upwards and the treble is a little sharper. Not huge differences though. I am going to keep the baseplate in case I get something really bright and thin that needs rounding off.

Once had a Dimarzio Morse set but in my guitar it sounded nothing like him- in fact, I hated them, although he obviously makes them sound good. I got closer to his sound with an SD Alnico Pro II though. Completely different pickups (and guitars, and players).

No not really. The general vibe is the same but like any online community over the years as people come and go the attitude can change. Though I doubt very highly this place could ever become even vaugely like HC... and thats a good thing.

The discussion seems to be based on Humbuckers, but I'll throw this in. I tried a set of Dimarzio Area 58/58/61 in a highway one strat back in December, and I'm totally happy with those pickups. Really nice clear strat tone, and no buzz or hum. Duncan makes a lot of nice pickups as well, I just wanted to try something different this time out. Pickups are one of many tone tools, and players use pups and other tone tools in different ways. So use what you like, and let's play some music.

What does SD have that compares closely to the Tone Zone? It's become my favorite bridge pickup to be honest . . . thick sound that gets better with more gain thrown at it, very pick sensitive, and splits really well. I was thinking that one of the PATBs might be similar based on the descriptions I've read.

Dunno if someone said this already but:

Seymour Duncan JB / Dimarzio Breed.

Both are very close, the Breed is a bit fatter, rounder and overall more refined compared to the JB's raspy, angry RnR attitude.

In my opinion Duncans are way more generic than Dimarzios. A lot of SD pickups are just A2 or A5 version of a pre-existing model they have and thats something you can do by yourself. Dimarzios are way more versatile and offer a more exclusive tone in my opinion. Look at the players that are endorsed by Dimarzio: Satriani, Vai, Petrucci, Gilbert, Timmons, Romeo, Howe, Marcello, Becker, Van Halen, Malmsteen (formerly user), Di Meola (formerly user), Eric Johnson (formerly user). I can go on and on with that list.

Seymour Duncan has a huge list of guitarists who use them, and aren't rewarded for doing so.

Gibbons, Angus Young, Slash, Holdsworth, Mustaine, Malmsteen, Eddie Van Halen (formerly DiMarzio), Lynch, DeMartini. No shortage of high profile Duncan users.

If you are going to dig out former users, Satriani used to use Seymour Duncan, and even admitted to continuing to do so while under endorsement from DiMarzio. Oops!

Each manufacturer has their unique designs. DiMarzio doesn't have a direct answer to the Custom, Pearly Gates or PATB-1. DiMarzio has more pickups that work well in funkier examples of basswood.

Apples and oranges for the most part. Generally I like Duncan bridge pickups and Dimarzio neck pickups.

Dude Van Halen uses Dimarzio. It's true that there are a lot of guitar players that use Duncans and aren't rewarded, but of those players you listed only Slash and Malmsteen may compare to the ones that use Dimarzios in terms of tone. Angus Young used a Custom Gibson pickup. Look at the players who used Super Distortion in the 80's, Ace Frehley, Dave Murray, Adrian Smith. Everybody knows that Satriani's tone comes from the FRED and Mo Joe.

Van Halen uses Fender pickups which are manufactured for them by... Seymour Duncan. He'd switched to pickups from Peavey before he left them for Fender.

Angus Young's custom Gibson is an overwound Pearly Gates with A5, last I heard, but they keep changing the pickups in his signature models, so I could be out of date on that one. He was known to use Pearly Gates in his backup guitars for a long time, though.

I find it amusing how many guitarists greatly respected for their tone you dismiss as not DiMarzio enough, or whatever your complaint is. Besides being an obvious nonsense post aimed at stirring up trouble.

Just in case, Jason Becker used a Duncan JB in the bridge along with Dimarzio single coils.

I like Dimarzios "love the EVO" But Duncan has tons better CS, and are better made. Plus everybody uses the JB or Distortion.
