Re: dimarzio vs duncan

Actually that was started by the very cool buddroyce, not by Dimarzio. It is unofficial. Nevertheless it is a good forum hosted by a cool guy.

Cool,good to know!
I hadn't been on there in a while, forgot my password...

Saw you were posting earlier,too,Frank!!!

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

Haha lets not overreact, we're happy to have all your Dimarzio questions (and every other brand) right here at the SDUGF! But yes, I'm a pickup enthusiast.

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

I like both companies for different things....

like I love some of the options DiMarzio has available like their Bluesbucker, PAF 36th, EJ humbuckers, Air Classic, their Soapbar pickups, and their Ultra Jazz Bass pickups.

Duncan to me has some great things going they have a lot of options for more vintagey sounds (which I like as I think DiMarzio usually is more modern) I especially like the Antiquities. The other benefit to Duncan is they can pretty much do any pickup you want in their custom shop. I think the P-Rails is groundbreaking and incredibly useful (I can't wait to try the mag swapping which I just recently found out about). And with their work doing like the Zephyr line it's probably safe to say that out of the two I'd prefer Duncan. But that's not to say that one company is really better it's just subjective opinion.

With that said I also like Fralin and Lollar pickups a lot. To me its hard to have complete brand loyalty when there are a lot of good options available for different uses.

I like Gibson's P90s more than any other pickup I have tried. I like Fenders 69s single coils more than any other single coil. Duncan gets my vote on most humbuckers.

I don't pay much attention to Dimarzio but I do like some of their pickups like the super dist. and air classic/norton.

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

Way dumb thread, but I'll bite.

I prefer Duncan bridges and Dimarzio necks.

My two best guitar playing buds are like this, my friend has all duncan bridges with dim necks and my other buddy has one PRS with a Dragon II and Dimarzio neck pup......

My one buddy's current setups are....
USA King V Dimebucker bridge PAF pro neck
MIJ King V El Diablo bridge PAF pro neck
Gibson Faded V Screamin Demon bridge PAF pro neck

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

I voted Duncan because after years of swapping I have found the JB and have not swapped out anything since. But I would keep a DMZ Breed, Evo 2, or Super Distortion, or PAF Pro neck in place in the right guitar. To me, it's not so much about the brands but finding the right pickups in each brand. That said, the JB is 'righter' than the Breed for my needs, but it depends on amp, speakers, style, guitar....

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

Overall, I prefer Duncans to all others; however, there are some DiMarzios I like very much.

+1. I have Duncans and Dmz's (along with Gibsons, Rios, etc), but I have more Duncans than any other brand. I think they have more to offer for blues and classic rock players like myself. Duncan has the best line of PAF's.

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

Duncans make the best sound period, el fin, end of story.

I've typed it before and I'll be typing it until my old arthritic hands stop working alltogether...

"The SH-6 is the best pickup ever made, it can do it all.. there is nothing better.... when SD created this pup, he won! Nothing more to see or do or even talk about.... DD all the way!!!!...woot woot!" ~Me

The SH-6 is the Chuck Norris of pickups!

sig that!

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

I am one of many, so my opinion is simply that. I do not subscribe to the notion of sticking with one brand or another for no other reason than loyalty. I try to find the best sound for my ears. As with many here, I find both major brands to be quite good. I play with Dimarzio Area pickups in my Strat, a Lace sensor in my tele, and Duncans in my Epi. I've played the Everything Axe Set and didn't care for the sound.

(insert sage wisdom and cliché saying here)

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

I have a lot more Duncans than Larry D's, especially here of late. I got into SDs because they were in so many of the Jacksons that I was checking out. The JBs and '59s were different from the Evos and EMGs I'd been playing with, and I wanted to see what they were all about. Gotta say… big fan.

I still love the DiMarzios that I've tried, particularly Breeds, HS-3s, and YJMs. I've got a Fred sitting around that I haven't really tried yet. Might have to scrape for an old Japanese S-series for that one.

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

I've tried a few Dimarzio's and not gotten on with any of them. Not to say they are not an excellent product, just my observation.

Budd is a cool guy, and I post over there from time to time. I just wish he (Budd) would use a different forum software. That thing he using now is just to hard to read.

Larry pops in from time to time as well.
