Dimebucker mag swap

Hey all-

I've always had a love/hate relationship with the dimebucker. It's this sizzly trebly bright scooped sound that instantly sounds like Pantera. Which to me is not a good start Haha. At the same time though, it has undeniably huge aggressive chug and great grind.

Has anyone ever swapped mags out of one? I have this concept of what an alnico 5 could sound like- and it intrigues me.

Re: Dimebucker mag swap

I'm not sure if the dimebucker is epoxied or not, might be easier to buy a wilde L500xl they have an A5 magnet.

Re: Dimebucker mag swap

IMO basswood bodies and rosewood boards work great with the dimebucker.
Full mahogany (body and neck) with rosewood works especially well.

For brighter/clearer guitars the Wilde xl would be the your best bet.

A dimebucker that chugs well and sounds like pantera? (and that's a bad thing how?) You'd think this was a sig pickup or something lol..
It sounds like this may not be the pickup for you..Not sure if its mag swap friendly or not, or what eq sweep you would get with a dif mag.

Re: Dimebucker mag swap

I second getting a real L-500XL from Wilde. The Dimebucker is a copy, and the real ones now use alnico magnets.

Re: Dimebucker mag swap

i don't think theres a magnet that you can get that will fot on the dimebucker, it uses an extra wide magnet, also have u tried using the tone pot? the dimebucker is one of those few high output pickups you actually want to use the tone pot with

Re: Dimebucker mag swap

To be clear, the Bill n' Becky L500XL with the Alnico V mag is NOT the same wind as the original L500XL/Dimebucker. The designs were modified (very nicely, I might add) to accomodate the A5 and provide a nearly identical voicing. I would argue that not even Duncan has been able to tweak their own designs as effectively (example: Pearly Gates vs Pearly Gates Plus).

The reason I point this out is that an A5 mag swap in the original L500XL or Dimebucker will NOT sound the same as the A5-equipped "Wilde" version.

That said, I can't recall how the "Dimebucker" was built, but I believe this was attempted here before around 10 years ago

Re: Dimebucker mag swap

here's a pic...notice the extra wide mag. You'd need spacers (at minimum) to accommodate a normal width mag.

Inside a Dimebucker. I'm hoping to try out a magnet swap simply to see how it responds with other type of magnet, if it does at all.

I've bought a Neodymium N35 magnet and will try that out IF I can get the copper tape/foil off without damaging it.

If I can and the results are what I'm looking for, I hope to 'promise' you something awesome next year. It'll look cool and sound hot :P

Unfortunately, it seems DeathMetalRob never finished his Dimebucker mag-swap project. Perhaps someone else will?

Yea I remember that thread masta' c and I believe I posted a follow up on it some time later asking how it was progressing because it was certainly unique and not done prior to my knowledge anyways...
