dimebucker or distortion-differences?

Wondering what the differenced in sound would be between the dimebucker and distortion in the bridge of a couple of my guitars.

Hamer Claifornian-honduras mahogany with sustainiac, floyd rose... want to change neck pickup from little 59 to hot rails. Thinking about dimebucker for the bridge? Right now has a JB trembucker in bridge.

Jackson DKMGTFF has EMG HZ pickups in it. Tjinking dimebucker or duncan distortion for bridge and fullshred or jazz for neck? Alder body, non trem model.

Play hard rock type music, Megadeth, Metallica, Nevermore, Dream Theater, Van Halen, Satriaini, Vai, etc....

Amp is a Bogner XTC classic

I reccomend trying the Tone Wizard to offer a little help first, (if you havn't yet...)

The distortion and Dimebucker are both great pick-ups for Metal!

Thanks...I took a look at the tone wizard. I have the distortion in a Nuno guitar and a basswood Zion. I like the Bite it has. Wondering how different the Dimebucker is in sound? Is it a good rock pickup?

The Dime is a little clearer, believe it or not, at least to me.

Kinda hard to recommend one pickup for all of those. I prefer the Dime because it has a tighter sound, but the DD might work better for those tones. The Dime is a good pickup, you can also get tones similar to Nuno's, he was using Lawrence L-500Ls which don't quite have the output of the 500XLs that Dime used, and the DB is based on, but a similar tone.

Through that Bogner almost anything should sound good.

You think the Didstortion will have more bite than the JB trembucker in the mahogany Hamer guitar?

How about in the alder jackson, with maple neck, rosewood fingerboard, tuneomatic bridge? WIll distortion or dimebicker be okay in the bridge for alder guitar? or different recommendation? C5 custom, custom custom, screamin demon?

The Metallica sound would depend on what era. I really like Kirk's old tone better, when he was still using passive pickups. I believe MegaDave is still a JB user. Not sure about Neverdudes. Satch and Vai are both DiMarzio users. Vai's pups are hot, while Satch's are more moderate output.
The Custom 5 has won me over for being versatile. Nice and full bodied. For your heavier stuff, though, the Distortion would work well. It palm mutes and stings for pinch harmonics.

sustainiac troubles in hamer-distortion-dimebucker??

sustainiac troubles in hamer-distortion-dimebucker??

I did some research on the sustainiac in my hamer californian and realized that when they modded the front slanted single coil route for a humbucker that the pickup is further back from the normal neck position.

This may be causing a artifact in magnetic pull from the sustainiac driver. Not sure what to do with this...I may have to put the unit in another guitar that meets the 4-5" drive to mid bridge center to cneter measurement requirements for the sustianiac.

Which leaves all these knobs and switches in my custom painted hamer to make use of...ugh....

3 knobs, 3 way swich and 2 way mini toggle switch and battery box that would have to find uses for..Any ides fro a guitar with 2 humbuckers with all these switches and pots? On board preamp?

How does the distortion sound in the neck?

I use the Duncan Distortion in my 1st lespaul and I can tell you after I put it in there, i noticed my tone getting tighter, clearer and added some thicker to the tone. I just baught another lespaul (Lespaul Custom) and i just ordered another Duncan Distortion for my bridge pickup.

The Distortion pickup definitly has alot of bite. Just be careful how high you set it up cause its one hot sucker, but provides a nice chug and push to the amp.

I'd toss that preamp (throw it on ebay), they always masked the tone or added noise to me (Though I love the Pickup Booster on the floor). As for those switches, you could do a series/parallel {if it's a DP/DT}, or series/split. The Distortion sounds killer clean in parallel. And the Distortion neck rocks, it's very underrated.

Nope!!!!! Its true that the Dime is based on the XL500 but, the tones are not even in the same ballpark!!!!!

The Dime sounds like am XL500 that you turned the treble up through the roof, turned up the fuzz through the roof, and thus lost the singing clarity the XL500 has for solo's! The Dime also has alot of harshness and just sounds trashy to my ears. Sounds like a mix between a buzzsaw and a garbage truck!

The XL500 is the most versatile pickup I have ever played. I can get alot of different wonderful sounds out of it. I have yet to hear anything pleasing to my ears out of the Dimebucker, including metal!

Thats a good idea..3 way mini toggle with 12 terminals to do series/split/parallel depending on position of 3 way pickup selector switch?

You think 2 volumes and a tone or 1 volume and 2 tones?

Thanks...I thought 2 volumes would be more useful as well...

How about in an alder jackson...Would distortion pickup be okay in there? or too bright of pickup for alder...I have one in basswood that sounds okay....Not sure of tonal differences between alder and basswood though?

+1. Blending my EMGs can give some nice tones in the middle, or I can add a little bass to my bridge position's tone.
