howdy this is my first post.

so i put a dimebucker in my guitar. i am really happy with it.
i know this is dumb but i feel funny about signature things. so i was wandering how different the distortion (sh-6) is from the dimebucker.
also i am looking for sombody to give me reason of why its ok to use signature equipment and that doesn't make me a copy cat. haha:1:

ok so anyways what is the difference?

Re: dimebucker vs distortion

Well I play Dime's ML (Dean From Hell) and that has a Dimebucker in it. Signature isn't as much as a copy cat, I look at it as a show of respect and idealization. If you didn't like the way they played, why would ya get it ya know?

But I had the SH-6, and I'd prefer the Dimebucker over it. It's so powerfull compared to the SH-6, but the SH-6 has a great sound also don't get me wrong. I think I'd stick around with the Dimebucker. Also what do you play? If you play Heavy stuff than stick with the Dime, if you play more Rock and what not, switch it over. Another thing about the Dimebucker is it's so versatile.

Re: dimebucker vs distortion

i play metal. all the extreme variety's with this guitar its in .and i dislike actives.

thanks for the reply man

Re: dimebucker vs distortion

I haven't seen many people on here who like the Dimebucker - that's not to say it's crap, if you like it, that's great. I've never tried one. But Dime never made any of the classic Pantera albums using a Dimebucker, so...if I wanted his classic tone I'd not be using a Dimebucker.
I have a Bill Lawrence USA 500XL (which Dime DID use apparently, which is why I bought one!) in the bridge of a Jackson Concept and it smokes - presumably your Dimebucker sounds similar so I can see why you like it so much!

As to why it's okay to use signature gear, well - who cares. If YOU like it, who cares what anyone else thinks? I bought an Alnico II Pro cos Slash uses them and I love his tone. I don't sound anything like him unfortunately, but then I don't try to. I also like my JB's and Marty Friedman uses them. It's okay to use ANY gear you like, no one else's opinion matters, if YOU enjoy using it.

I love the Distortion BTW. It sounds quite similar to the Bill Lawrence USA 500XL actually - the harmonics scream out of both of them, and riffage is TIGHT!

Buy another guitar and put a Distortion in it. ;)

yea i know dime used the bill lawrence. it just have his name on it. you guys are right though who cares.
i would say most people dont like the dime becuase it is really really really bright. my amp has a lot of knobs and stuff though so i dailed that out without everything being muffled.

Select almost any pickup and there'll be famous guitarists who're heavily associated with it, so you're a just as much a copy cat if you use any other pickup. The Dimebucker might be a bit peculiar because it is actually named after a particular guitarist, but as Shakespeare said: "what's in a name?"

(edit: I missed your previous post before I replied before, lol)

Re: dimebucker vs distortion

Being a member of the Dean Forum and having used the Dimebucker in several guitars; DFH, FBD etc... I found it far to shrill. The Duncan Distortion is a much more usable pickup. The Dimebucker is basically a overwound L500XL. I am not that fond of them either unless it's one of the original ones. The BLUSA's suck, the Bill & Becky is a much better example

Re: dimebucker vs distortion

Yea Dime didn't use the Dimebucker, and the Lawrences I think sound better. I have Lawrences in an Ibanez and it screams. Also my Dean originally came with a Lawrence, I switched it to a Bucker just to test it, and I liked it so kept it.

Re: dimebucker vs distortion

yea like i said it is very very very bright. i did have too dail that out. but i love the tone i am getting.

i got this pickup becuase i wanted somthing hot and i dont like the jb's bottom end. those were the only hot pickups at the music store. i took my chances on the dime bucker. i am glad i did. i still may get a distortion in another guitar.

how do you guys think the distortion would pair in a jackson sl-1 versus the jb thats in it.

Re: dimebucker vs distortion

if your getting a real bright tone, try a lower value pot(probably 250k) and a higher value capacitor(possibly .02 or .03) on your tone pot(if you have a tone pot). http:shop.wymoreguitars.com has all that stuff under the allparts electronics page.

and welcome!

Re: dimebucker vs distortion

The distortion vs JB thing comes up pretty often. It seems that they have the same coils so a magnet swap to ceramic pretty much changes the JB to a Distortion, not quite though because the distortion uses a thicker magnet, and is often called a distortion lite. I just changed a JB to alnico 8 and am really loving it at the moment. So, in short, try magnet swaps with the JB first because it is far cheaper that buying a new distortion. Try a serch on JB8, there have been some sound clips recently.

i'd also say try swapping magnets in the jb first. the jb with an a5 is kinda lame(imo). it's also real nice with an a2, it's more versatile, though i'm sure that's not what your looking for. although, i use my JB2 for higher gain stuff and it holds up just fine. it's real smooth and chunky, real nice for palm mutes and shreddy lines.

Re: dimebucker vs distortion

i have no idea hot to do a magnet swap or where to get it done.

how much is that $ wise to get done

Honestly, I just did my first mag swap a few days ago and it was far easier than I could believe. The only difficulty for me was taking off the pickup covers. Give it shot, it will be one of the most cost effective improvements you can make.

Re: dimebucker vs distortion

+1
Far too shrill IS an understatement though.
Seriously, the Dimebucker IS THE worst aftermarket bridge pickup I've ever used, bar none. Nothing sounds as crappy, thin, empty and lifeless than that. But again, I don't play Pantera or Rhythm that much, only smooth shreddy leads 80's shred style.
