what do you ppl think?

I have a blunt sunburst strat with rosewood fretboard and want to convert it to white (selling or buying another is not an option).

IMO...
Thin, hard coatings, such as automotive paints and clears, or thin coats of nitro, don't have a huge effect on tone because of their hardness. Vibrations travel through them without much dampening effect.

Plasti dip is both thick, and soft. It will absorb the resonances from the wood and dampen them, and will have a greater effect on tone. Kind of like singing through a pillow.

Not saying that the tone will be better or worse, but I would expect it to be different.

thnx Taz. I'll have it in mind. In fact Plasti dip is more stiff and thick than Dupli color "sprayplast", I am thinking of experimenting with the latter. Now if you imagine 300 EUR vs 15 EUR, its a no-brainer I am gonna try that.

LOL yeah, for sure. The price difference is a no brainer for sure. Don't get me wrong...I wasn't trying to steer you or discourage you from using the plastic paint. I was just pointing out that you should expect a tonal change. Who knows...you may like it better. I don't think it's a case of right or wrong...only different.

Here's a plus...the plastic paints are very easy to remove if you don't like the results, and fairly durable if you do like it.

BTW...on a tangent...lots of rattle can paints can give you nearly as good a finish as automotive paints...if you are willing to put in the extra work to get it there.

ahh it's this extra work, space, and time that I simply don't have. I have seen a lot of guitar paint HOWTOs and concluded this is beyond the cost I could spend on tools, in addition to no space/time. Your input is rather encouraging!

Have you tried that? It seems you have gone through the hard and proper way.

You should do a material finish one day. You can buy all the stuff at the hardware for cheap and it works a treat.

I tried to plasti-dip a guitar body, a few thoughts:

- PD is not as durable as regular paint

- I find it tough to work with, you can't fix runs without special thinner I think

- it's grippy, not smooth. I wouldn't like it as a finish if my arm touches the guitar.
