Disagreement with music store employee

Re: Disagreement with music store employee

I agree with the common thought here... He's just trying to move a guitar to make a commission or he really is dumb enough to think this is acceptable on a guitar.

Could be a high fret, I've had that before. Worse yet, ever heard of a ski-jump? It's where the neck/fretboard curves towards the end near the pickups making it fret-out without even bending. I've had the grievous misfortune of having not one but two guitars with that issue. A level and crown will get it pretty-much fixed, but the only way to fully cure it is to have them level and plane the fretboard during a re-fret.

Re: Disagreement with music store employee

I once had a salesman tell me I should keep putting lemon oil on a fretboard where the treble side of one fret kept lifting up. Really? Lemon oil. Really?

I use lemon oil on rosewood boards all the time. It helps maintain the wood. Since wood shrinks when it's dry, the lemon oil might actually have helped hold it in place until it was properly fixed. A bit of a long shot but not a ridiculous suggestion.

I haven't read any of this thread except the title.

I'm guessing though it went something like:

Astro: I'm really interested in buying this [Les Paul / Strat / Ibanez / PRS / whatever].

Salesman: No you aren't.

Astro: Yeah, seriously, I AM!

Salesman: Yeah, sure.

Astro: I am really serious;y gonna buy one of these.

Salesman: Except for the part where you Iceman me on the cash. You might buy a set of strings. We have a deal on 10 packs of D'addarios going on at the counter over there.

Glenn. The one thing that I cannot believe that you did not use the "flaw" in the guitar as leverage to wangle a discount.

This schoolboy error deserves a Godzilla Facepalm.

Re: Disagreement with music store employee

I visited a local store that had a nice LTD H guitar, it was purple and had a nice pair of duncans: a custom 5 bridge and jazz neck. Mahogany body, maple top, maple neck, rosewood board. Purple finish.

I plugged it in and it sounded great, I then started to play this instrumental song I'm writting and then I hit one of the high notes in the song... and got nothing. the fret was totally dead.

The salesman then tried to convince me that every guitar has frets like that, that are dead, and he said the action was too low on the guitar too.

I told him that I loved it, but the guitar I own has no dead frets and I have the action set way lower. I also said my guitar is priced a little less than this specific LTD.

I can't believe he actually tried to sell me the guitar, insisting that every single guitar is flawed. Ever deal with someone like that?

You should have waited until he turned his back then hit him with a folding steel chair

Re: Disagreement with music store employee

That's why it says LTD on the headstock. Limited quality and playability. LOL

If it said ESP, it would mean they had the Extra Sensory Perception needed to make a quality guitar. haha

they're hit or miss. my 2010 MH-350 required a fret-leveling out of the box for me to be satisfied, but i've never touched the frets on my H-401FM, and it plays perfectly with super-low action.

Re: Disagreement with music store employee

it looks like a 2009 H-1000 judging by the pre-ugly headstock and lots of abalone. with a good setup, it has the potential to be a killer guitar. but $1000 is about twice as much as i would pay.

Re: Disagreement with music store employee

yeah price sounds right in line with the slimy salesman. maybe they should try used cars next time.

Re: Disagreement with music store employee

The easiest way to get a salesperson to take you seriously is to flash your cash.

Re: Disagreement with music store employee

Always ask for a setup and new strings be installed on a new guitar.
If I buy a new guitar I want this included in the deal.

There should be no reason why a good shop wouldn't do this for you for
a sale

Wheel and deal with the shop and get everything you want.

On the other subject though, that salesman is an idiot that needs to learn about the
products he is trying to sell.

The **** that comes out of music store employees' mouths when you play dumb is priceless.

As for the price, it's the practice of some shops to post list price on everything. My favorite guitar shop does that, and it drives me nuts, because I have to take everything and subtract 30% to figure out what Musician's Friend is charging for it. But it's a great shop.

Yep, I find if you play dumb with store employees in a few areas you actually get to hear what they really know or don't as the case may be.:)

Yeah, my favorite store does this but they go overboard. $119 for a Bad Monkey...

Re: Disagreement with music store employee

Dead notes are a common problem with this style of guitar body. PRS guitars used to be affected a lot (although it's claimed they found a fix).

You might be able to fix it by weights on the headstock. Or the truss rod might be in a weird position and wiggling fixes it. But then - maybe not.

Really ? WTF are you smoking dude ? Chances are that the truss rod is probably too tight. Maybe loosening it would alleviate the issue with the dead note. Also, I would check the height on the guitar as well. If it's too low, that could be the problem as well. Giving it a little bit of height would definately fix that dead fret.

Re: Disagreement with music store employee

sellers know what kind of people the buyer is just by looking his face.
go figure.

And then when you call them on their bull**** you have a lot of leverage in negotiation. They won't want to explain to their boss why they 1) lied to a customer or 2) are that ignorant of the product they sell.
