Dissapointed with Marshalls for modern metal...

Re: Dissapointed with Marshalls for modern metal...

Good call. I really, really, detest the sound of Vintage 30s. The Blue Dog/Greenback is an interesting choice, as I'm in the process of building a similar setup in a 2x12 -- I already have the Bluedog, and I'm waiting on the Scumback M25 Greenback clone.

I think you'll like the Bluedog/Greenback combination. The Bluedog is just a bit thicker in the mids and does'nt have quite the treble response of the GB, so it all fills in real nice. I've read good things about the Scumback clones. Let us know how it turns out for you.

If anyone has seen the recent Dio Holy Diver DVD, Doug Aldrich uses a rented DSL on there juiced with a Fulltone Fulldrive. The tone is superb.

AAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

This sounds just like the situation in one of my recent threads.

Tell me your Master/Preamp Volume settings and I'll tell you what you did wrong.

<--- godly tone

Re: Dissapointed with Marshalls for modern metal...

personally I'd just not use marshall. I like them, but I'm all for modern metal, and so they're really for me.

like, 1 of 10. It's a pawn shop now! ;) I wish I could turn it up to 1 o clock, but then again, I'd rather not get the boot.

Vintage 30's aren't bad speakers. They are bright, and tend to work best with darkish amps. My nephew's Mig 50 is a perfect match for these speakers. They turn that dark amp into a really sweet marshall tone machine. Kind of a cross between a Plexi and a JCM-800. Very nice mix really.

G12H30's are basically the opposite of Vintage 30's in that they take bright amps and tone their highs down to manageable levels while giving the bass response a nice kick in the pants to boot. Both have sweet mids while the V30's are raunchy and the G12H30 is mellow. Both are indespensable tone tools and go great together like chocolate and peanut butter.

Re: Dissapointed with Marshalls for modern metal...

Who invented metal ???? - SABBATH - Metal Amp ???? - LANEY !!!

Actually, I saw plenty of early Sabbath performances and Iommi was using an Orange, NOT a Laney amp. Orange = Metal!!!!!

I'm sure glad you posted this. That's a good description. Just reading stuff on the internet, it would be easy to come away with the impression that V30's are harsh, ice pick through the eardrum speakers, and G12H's are honky country twang speakers! Neither would be correct impressions.

Well, duh!....LOL There's not a 50 or 100 watt tube amp that sounds good with the master and or gain at 1. You gotta get those babies up there. Gain at about 2 o'clock and Master Volume close to noon is a good start. :)

:smack: :smack: :smack:
Wait... you are telling us that a 100W all-tube amp with the master on 1 and the preamp-volume on 1 sounds thin? (that translates into 0.1 for a non master volume amp)
OF COURSE FFS... what did you expect?
Turn the master to at least 7 and the preamp to at least 2 and then take a listen again and see if it's thin...

KRANK IT UP FOKKA!!!! :headbang:

I can make my TSL sound quite chunky. You have to know how to dial it in. Period.
The master has to be on 4 at least.

Re: Dissapointed with Marshalls for modern metal...

V30s have their place for sure....warm plexis....many mesa's, etc....but on anything with some brightness..Metalface...JMP...800..later....they sound pretty nasty (in a bad way)...IMO of course. They are the Duncan JB of celestions...when they are right, they are awesome...but with the wrong setup :earl:

G12H on the other hand I feel don't ever really sound "bad" they def will warm up and tame a bright/grinding marshall like a DSL/TSL/900 series, but still sound great with the warmer marshalls.

And yes..running a tube amp's master on 1, is like overdriving a Roland Jazz Chorus...ANY tube amp gain channel sounds like crap at low volumes.
